Is the black stuff on the wheel just paint? If the whole thing is magnesium, it might look cool with the paint stripped off, and then polished.

P-61s are cool planes, I built a model kit of one once.

Funny how life works isn't it?:D

With the holidays, the club was a bit behind with our Christmas gifts. You guys will never guess what I got for my gift... a book on the operational histories of the various P-61 units. I haven't put it down since I got it. :D

That's right you are all into the planes. Can you post a link to the Bomber Girl art you guys did in this post- that was sweet as hell.

It's still amazing you guys noticed that wheel was from a p-61 out of all the planes out there.

Tony - "P-61" would be some good numbers for the doors on the truck.

Yeah, I'm starting to see that. You need to have a talk with Hammeredabone and see if he has any gun turrets or landing gear I can install. By the way your car is looking killer.

Yep if you guys hadn't found me when you did, I could still be laying big g***less booger welds - I miss all those hours of grinding. (I was running flux core before - it looked all the same to me:confused:).

El scotto - its like a thick epoxy paint. Its chipped of in places.

I can't believe this is that rare - almost 800 produced. It was on Ebag in front of God and everybody - right there in "Soap Box Derby Parts" :D.

I wouldn't use it. It seems like people are willing to trade you what you need ( a column and a steering wheel) just so you DON'T use it!

I'll put it another way; you have decided that you want to use an airplane wheel in your hot rod. Fine. Is there anything in your mind that would distinguish WHAT KIND of wheel? I mean, if you ran a common-as-nails Cessna wheel, would it be any different of an experience?

The plane that it came off of is now super-rare. I would contact the place that is restoring one, and see if they need it. Those guys are really dedicated, and need all the help they can get. Sometimes, there just aren't parts available.

That wheel could really be useful in something other than a hot rod, is all I'm saying...

is it possible to make a mold of it and make one? then sell the original to a restorer?

How would us as hot rodders feel about having the old lady as a neighbor use E & J headlight buckets as flower pots on her front porch?

Believe me I AM all for the use of the wheel ......but to help a group and contribute so EVERYONE can benefit off of such a rare piece would definitely make me feel better than using it for myself.

    Thanks man! :)

Yeah! abone is going to help me with those lower wheel well panels. He's a RULER for sure. I'll check with him on a turret. A landing gear wheelie bar will be right up your alley too with that steering wheel! ;):D

All the guys and Django would be rightly honored if that wheel were to grace the Salt Queens' steering column. And I know if the guys at the P-61 Project needed it, we'd have no problems with it going there instead.:)

If it were me, I would have photoshopped an "installation" with crooked drywall screws, cracked out holes and checkerboard handlebar wrap around it by now.

Airplane drama on the HAMB? I've been away a while. This is a nice change of pace. Never knew Django and the guys at HRCC were that into 61s. Do be gentile to the wheel, what ever you decide to do wih it.

Yeah, if we ended up with somehow, it would go into the Bonneville car. That's true. I haven't spoken to the museum directly, but from what I understand, they have a couple wheels. I think they may have even tracked down the original wheel from the plane but that guy doesn't want to part with it.

I've been researching this particular wheel, and I have found it used also in the A-26 Invader. Probably why you thought it was a B-26 wheel (B-26 is the post war designation for the A-26 Invader, not to be confused with the WWII actual B-26 Maurader. Confusing, isn't it? ) It was also used in the flying wing program. I haven't concluded if the post war Invader had them or not just yet. I'm looking for pictures to match the printing on the wheel to see which aircraft it was from.

Of course we are Appleseed. They rule. You saw the Pileup Moohlah thread, right? My first WWII model I ever built was the Monogram P-61. It's still in my parent's ba*****t.

    Our bonneville car...

It wasn't a girl on the plane. That was Back Seat Betty with the girl. But here is the link to the nose art on the B-24 we painted thread from last year. I just updated it with pics from our FLIGHT. :D
