Mounting an Oldsmobile/Buik 215 in a Model A frame

I'm looking for advice or ideas on mounting a 215 in a Model A frame.

I have searched a few times and I know there are people that have them in their cars, but I couldn't find any photos on how they did it.

Something like this (pictured is a SBC kit), would be nice.

The problem is that my stock engine mounting points are about 10" inboard on the frame (inside of the rails, boxed). It's seems to me that I would have problems if I made the mounts that long.

I found Ford Flathead mounts that appear to be a bit longer, but the length is not shown.

The other option is to run it like this (from here- http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=7528236)

Except I don't have the ability to mount a crossmember this way due to lack of bolts and the oil filter being on the front, pasenger side. I would have to go under the oil pan to connect to the mounts as far as I can tell. I don't want to do that.

I could make mounts that hung off the frame, to connect to the stock engine mounts, but they would have to be beefy, and I think it might look funier than having the Olds in there in the first place :p

Any other ideas or photos that could help would be appreciated.

I don't quite understand what is wrong.

Any chance you can do pics of your frame and your motor? Hambers like pics of the victim, not random pics :)

I am positive some guys here are using the 215s but not sure if Olds or Buick, or if it matters in an A.

  3. Ch***is Engineering Buick 300 motor mounts will work with a minimal amount of clearancing around the freeze plug holes.

I bought the block mounts and rubber pads from CE and made my own frame mounts.

F&J- Yes, we all like pics, that's why I asked for them. I figured the people that knew something would reply with info. Guess not.

A lot of mounts I see must be wider blocks, and the mounts are a lot closer to the frame.

Thanks Bib. This is new to me and has not been done a lot. Can you tell me the width of your frame inside the rails?

EDIT- You found a set of Lake Headers?!?!?!?!?!?! WOW

The mounts just looked like they were a long ways away from the rails. It's a real light engine, but I want to be sure that mounts wouldn't be too long. Thanks for the tip on the 300 kit.

Looks like something I can copy using the generic rubber pad kits available.

Here's how I did the ones in my Vicky. The full crossmember helps out with the engine mounts being so far inboard. It has a slight V to it for oil pan clearance.

    Why THANK YOU!

I had mocked up the engine quite a bit lower in the frame. I thought it looked like I had a lot of room under the hood. I want to retain the stock front wishbone so that will make things easier.

    I appreciate the photos.

Here is what I have so far. I cut down the stock Model A trans mount. Move it forward. It seems to work well since it is basically a steel box that fit into the frame rails. The motor mounts are 7/16" bar stock with 3/8" gussets. They bolt to the original engine mount bosses.

I used the stock engine mounts in the Crosley and fabricated a bracket from the frame over. You shouldn't have any problem with stiffness - it's a light motor........:D These are the only photos I can find - not very clear, but may help.

If you have a choice of Buick or Olds 215 - the Olds has the better head design and was more widely used in racing (better combustion chamber shape and 5 head bolts per cylinder instead of 4 on the Buick) - find the 4bbl, high compression heads. Intakes, exhaust manifolds, etc. interchange with the Buick.

FMS, that looks like an easy set-up, and using the stock mounts! Nice work! I have the Olds 215

Jim- I have seen your mounts. Very clean. Using parts of the stock trans. mount is a great idea. I have to pull it out anyway.
