My question is how far away from the bottom of the car should the lake pipes be mounted so the heat won't cause paint damage? I have seen alot of posts on lake pipes but haven't seen anything on the spacing from the car. I have a 1953 monterey and don't want them sticking out to far that it looks goofy but yet not spend the money on a paint job and it bubbles and burns. Thanks for any information.
About 98% of the long rocker (60") lake pipes I've ever seen were dummies. There were some that were hooked up around '57 (San Jose, CA) but a lady was standing next to a '52 Ford convert on 1st St., and burned her leg. Police were called, big 'Tadoo' was raised. Made the papers, was a big story for over a week. San Jose police were pulling guys over, checking to see if they were hooked up! It was a fix it ticket with a fine. ($25, iirc.) After that, it was rare to see a car with 'kickstands' that were 'plumbed-in'... On a similar note, many street racers (and street/strip cars) ran shorty cutouts just behind the front tires. They were capped with a 'diamond' shaped plug, 2 bolt flange...(like on the regular 'lakes pipes'...) Lots of guys would run on Sunday, then drive home with them open. ("Uncorked") Police soon cracked down on that one, too...To correct a fix-it ticket, they would weld the nuts on, but some protesting policeman cried so loud that the accepted 'fix' was to weld the whole perimeter, all the way around the plug & flange! I always had 'header plugs', just not visible unless you looked way under...
