We got a 429 out of 68 cad, it's got the sump up front but we need to move it to clear the cross member.

Anyone out there making parts to simplify the conversion to a rear sump?

    Thanks in advance.

If it's a '68 engine, it's no 429. Most likely a 472, and yes, an Eldorado pan and pickup is what you need.

Maximum Torque Specialties should have whatever you need to build a ridulous Caddy powerplant

Kool...thanks for the posts guys. I appreciate the info. I'll run the numbers on the motor to make sure we know what we got.

If the motor is out of 1968 Caddy, it has to be a 472. It's the only motor offered. The 500 wasn't offered until 1970 in Eldorados only. The 429 was available from 1964-1967. 472 and the 500 are the same motors though, so the 500 parts will interchange

  7. Simple to fugure out, if the dizzy comes out the front at an angle, and the belt driven components bolt more to the engine than to brackets, it's a 472.
And a MUCH cheaper alternative to the Eldo pan (mucho dinero, compadre) is a 425 pan from 79 to end of production (V8-6-4 will work fine, also). The onlyest thing to do with a 425 pan is to shorten the oil pickup bracket (the one to the main cap): 425 main caps are shorter, so the bracket is longer. Simple to do, really, just cut it, shorten it about 1/4", then tack it, install, and offer up the oil pan, if it sets on the pan rails (no gasket), you're good.

Another way to tell is the 472 will have a smog pump. They all did. GM set up the pullies and accessories so you had to run it. One belt runs the water pump and uses the SP to tension it. The alt. runs off of the water pump. To remove it, you can plug off the injection ports on the front of the heads with 5/8" freeze plugs. Later model 425's should have the right brackets to eliminate it. www.500.cid.com is a great resource!

  10. www.500.cid.com is a spam site. Remove the dot between 500 and cid

ok...well we run the number and they came back as a 1967 429. And from what i've been told I can use a 64-65 429 pan or a 67 eldo pan.

So I'm on the hunt. I'll create a post over in the want ads. If anyone can help track one down. I'd really appreciate it.

And thanks again to everyone for all the feedback.
