I'm just wondering if anyone knows if a 32 5 window coupe body will fit in the box of a chevy colorado? I'm told it will fit in the back of a half ton but life would be easier if it will also fit in the back of a colorado... Length wise it should be okay with the tail gate down but I'm not sure about the width. The body is only firewall back and it doesn't have any rear fenders so I'm not sure if the cowl end or the trunk end would fit between the wheel wells of the box which is 42.6"(about 3.5'). If anyone can let me know if this will work or not I'd appreciate it!
Now I have never measured it before but from what I could tell from having a '31 Chevy at one time is that they are bigger then a Model a in width and length. So if I were a betting man I would say you'd need a full size pickup.
I'm thinking the body is going to be too wide. Here are some frame dimensions and should give you a better idea. http://www.wescottsauto.com/WebCatalog/FrameDiagram1932.pdf
I have a 2000 Chevy Extreme S-10...smaller than your Colorado...and I put 5 foot 2x4's across the bed where there are molded cutouts in the bedside and I have hauled several different deuce bodies with it. The body rides above the wheelwells.
I'm sorry I mis read it I thought you were talking about a '32 Chevy body. I still think you'll need a full size.
You can't even get a sheet of plywood to slide between the wells of a Colorado or Canyon. I currently have a Canyon and you have to put 2x4s on top of the wheel wells to haul plywood. Even when I haul deuce bodies in the back of of my HD Silverado I have a pallet made of 4x4s and a sheet of plywood so the wells don't put pressure on the body. Hauled lots of deuce bodies this way.
A small enclosed trailer would be a LOT better U-Haul rents them ... if you do not have a friend who has one. I could not begin to think about not having one. In fact ... I have two ...
You can always nail several pallets together to raise the floor above the side rails. It's a little crude, but it works!
A 32 body is a tight fit in an S-10, it should be a similar fit in a colorado...here is pic when I got my fordor body.
From the windows down, the 5wd is the same size as a Fordor. Regardless of what the girl at U-Haul tells you, it WON'T fit INSIDE a 5x9 trailer. It will fit on top though. JH
Thanks for all the great advice guys. jalopykid, how long is your box? Okay, here's my deal... The body that I'm getting is about 12 hours from me one way. What I'd like to do is fly to where it is(I work for an airline and can fly for next to nothing) then do a one way rental with a pick-up back home. This will save me a day and some gas money even with the the cost of the rental. Kind of a no brainer for me. The problem now is that I see that the company that rents the Colorado only has the crew cab model so that means that the box will be quite short and I may be out of luck with this plan. I see that width wise it will fit even if I have to block it up a bit so as long as this stubby little box will work I should be okay. If it is too short I wonder if I bought a couple 8' 2x6's and place them under the rockers to "extend the box" and then secured the body down really well at the front if that would work? Just brain storming right now on how to make this work.......
You can't rent a full size truck? We had one once, because that was all the rental place happened to have that weekend -
Nope. No one there has one way full size truck rentals. I can rent a full size but it has to be returned to where it was picked up.
If it doesn't fit, take a look at hauling it upside down. It might fit better that way. As long as it is solid and you cushion it, it should ride fine.
U haul has one way rentals of all sorts of trucks. if I were hauling a 32 body 12 hours I'd get a box truck and haul it inside. now is not the time to cheap out. "it didn't quite fit and fell out the back out on the road, but look at the money I saved on transporting it"
