Okay folks, I'm relocating to Chicago with car in tow...and can't believe I am heading back to snow... anyway. I'll have temporary housing (which means no garage or tools) Things I need to know ASAP: Best place in the west side to get a burger. Best Bar to hear ****** tonk, cut the rug and grab a beer... I need a trim shop ASAP!!!! Who do you recommend? Paint booth to rent? Where # I figure with winter I might aswell finish the things on my ride I've been putting off while living in Southern California Looking forward to meeting new people and seeing what the Windy City has to offer, so if you see the Edselero around town, say hi
Not completely familiar with the windy city, but have been there once. Not sure about the best burger joint, but I do know where to get an excellent steak...if you budget can handle it!
Welcome. You'll get all sorts of opinions on the best burger place on the West side of town. Old Car Mike here has done some great trim work for a number of folks I know on the board. You might want to check out the SW Chicago HAMB and Eggs group that meets Saturday mornings at Chuck's BBQ in Burbank. Great bunch of guys and plenty of opinions around the table.
well i dont envy you my freind.i moved away in 73,moved back in 87 and moved back south in 88. hated the traffic and the weather..i grew up in the burbs and i really really really hate snow and real cold weather.aint to fond of real hot weather either.lol. but there is plenty going on in the burbs and the city now. not so much when i lived up there.wish you luck and watch your back.
Welcome to the windy city my friend! I am a recent transplant to the north of the city and I can tell you there isnt ONE place. There are MANY!
DON'T DO IT!!!! STAY IN CALIFORNIA! but if you don't listen then welcome to Chicago. Burger- Most will say Kuma's. It's good but not amazing, full of at***ude and a crazy long wait. I like Lockdown, it's cheaper, cheaper beer, and they have an Elvis burger. If you're missing In-n-out, like I do, go to M burger downtown. It's as close as it gets. By far my favorite but a little outta the way being downtown. Bar for music and dancing-Martyr's on the first thursday of the month has a rockabilly night, live bands and dancing. Lots of car club guys go there. Make sure to wear a retro ****on down or a black t-shirt though or you'll be stared at like an outsider. haha. not kidding. There are a couple other bars that have rockabilly nights, Exit, Bob inn, Delihlas(spelling wrong) others but I can't remember. Trim shop as in car interior or hair cuts? Interior, Ogden top and trim in Berwyn. Best around, been there for decades. They do hot rods, restorations, vintage ferraris...you name it. Quality work, reletively reasonable prices. John is the man. Hair cuts I'd say belmont barber shop. Old style place I think it's $17 bucks. Car magazines to look at while you wait. Can't help witht the paint booth though. I'm sure some of the smaller shops would rent you thiers but you'll have to do some research and ask around. Good luck and maybe I'll see you around when you get here!
Come to HAMB and Eggs on every saturday morning, 7am, and you will recieve the wisdom you seek. Leave the flip flops on the coast! Welcome...
Define "west side". The west side of Chicago is pretty rough, or do you mean the western suburbs. Big difference. Can you give us abetter idea of about where you will be located? The Chicago area is huge. Honky Tonk BBQ in the Pilsen neighborhood has great food, music and atmosphere. There's also The Horseshoe on Lincoln for good BBQ and music. Great BBQ at Q in LaGrange, too. Reggies on S. State has good food and music. Some claim that The Brauerhouse in Lombard has incredible ("gourmet")burgers. They're ok... if you can get the waitresses to actually bring you one... but they come with tater-tots, so bonus. Good music there, too, plus the Bare Bones host a cruise night in the summer. As mentioned, Chuck's on the south side is really good if you like cajun and BBQ. Great place for the HAMB & Eggs. I 2nd OldCarMike as an upholsterer. He did the seats in my Econo, as well as some vintage furniture in my house. His work is incredible and affordable. Ogden Trim does good work, but they are pricey and busy. There are a lot of great car shows, clubs, and HAMBers in the Chicago area. I look forward to meeting you soon.
Welcome to Chicago. You'll find that the December - April months here are very similar to SoCal. What brings you to the midwest? I'll need to make it out to SW Chicago Hamb & Eggs one morning...
P.S., Oldcarmike is doing the interior of this 32 sedan. Seats and panels are done, finished in leather, came out great. Finishing it up as we speak . Great work, great guy. I'll invite you over after HAMB and Eggs if you'd like to see his craftsmanship.
Hi everyone, thanks for the input and the intros! My car gets here this week, so hopefully I'll truck it through the snow if I have to and grab some coffee with ya! (Now I have to hook my heater up---errrrr so not California) Currently living in a hotel while we look for a place to live. Most likely will be looking someplace near, in, around Oak Park. Here for to work and live and see what Chicago is all about. Be meeting you all soon! BTW- Hellfish, nice Econo! I'll look up that trim shop! -2hep
Welcome! There's plenty of good stuff here! Gene&Judes hot dogs, the Hala Kahiki tiki bar, The Braurhouse, voodoo Larry's Saturday night cruise in, Lombards,Elmhurst, and Downers Grove cruise nights just to name a few! If we keep having winters like this years, you can drive all year!
