You should be able to find the info you need here Dave. http://www.colorado.gov/cs/Satellite/Revenue-MV/RMV/1177024843128

It looks like you will need

Your current ***le and registration
A certified weight slip and or the weight listed on the current ***le.
Proof of insurance
Vin verification.

Emission test if applicable. The Colorado bunch will have to fill you in on this one.

An advance welcome to the U.S. If you've not been here before, things are a bit different, but at least Americans speak English. Well, sorta their own version of English. But, I'm sure you'll be able to communicate...for the most part. (smiling)
I'm not certain what exact problems you might encounter with getting the coupe legal, but I'm sure it can be done without much trouble. Mr48Chev offered a pretty good guide (above posting).
By the way, sorta ex-pat here. Born in Cornwall and my mother left right away as the huns started bombing the island. Yeah, it was a LONG time ago. During WWII.
(it was in all the papers)
When you get here let us know how it's going!!

5. Better not let the Communist Republic of Boulder find out you have a smog-spewing, gas-burning, loud hot-rod... just paint "hybrid" on the back and you'll be good. :D Good luck on the move, and an advance welcome from a native!

6. I just heard an interview with a scholar that was researching the English language and he mentioned our version of the Kings word is closer to what teh Colonists would have brought over from England and that teh modern Brit accent is from a heavy French influence in the 17th and 18th centuries. :p

Ahh Boulder, had friends that lived there in the 90s. Trustifarians and tree huggers. The residents, not my friends.

You can apply for a "Street Rod" plate, which is personalized, for '48 and earlier vehicles and renews yearly ...or you can choose "Collector" plates which renew every five years, and will run you about $300 for five years...neither of these require emissions inspections. You can get regular plates, which renew yearly, but you'll have to go thru emissions inspections every renewal and the price is based on year of manufacture and whether you want it personalized....

Bring ***le, registration, proof of insurance, your driver's license (preferably local once you get here), pictures of your car (if applying for Collector or Street Rod) and be prepared to spend half a day, or longer, in the Boulder Motor Vehicle Department.

You sure you want to move to Boulder...???

I think regerstering the car in colorado has been covered pretty well. i have no clue what it will take to actually get the car in the states as far as getting it off a ship and through customs.

Any way welcome to Colorado if you get tired of the boulderites cruise on up to loveland and stop by the shop.

If you search the US Customs website, you'll be able to find most of the info you need. I looked at hauling a car home from Canada (I'm about an hour from the bridge between Detroit and Windsor) and as long as it was once a US manufactured car, you shouldn't have much problem. I still haven't done it, though, so I don't know the final ins and outs.

Good luck and welcome to the New World. Mind the rules.

well, welcome to the states, you are moving 35 miles from the nicest place in the country. Estes Park Co is by far the prettiest place around, there is tons of cool places to drive your car out there, drive 'em all man, i'm jealous. (even though i'm going there this month)

You will be fine. Anything from out of state, and registered new in colorado will need a vin verification done. And that can be done by anyone that is a colorado automotive dealer, trailer dealer, state police, or local cops. And as said before current insurance, and enough cash. anything is possible.

Boulder; home of hippies, self-en***led college brats, and Prius-driving nerds.

Anyway, once you get settled check out the Colorado HAMBers social group, there are a lot of hot rod people in this state.

'34 original, with corresponding ***le, vin verification required of course, with Colorado Driver's license and Colorado ***le, you can get 'Horseless Carriage' plates, will cost you less than $20, current run of plates expire in 2014. Go to http://www.colorado.gov/cs/Satellite/Revenue-MV/RMV/1185870965443

If you opt for the Horseless Carriage plates, you don't need any other plates. They issue one plate, it goes on the back of your car, none required on the front (when registered as HC). At county of residence dmv get the ***le ONLY. The local(County) dmv won't want to help you with the HC plate process because they lose revenue.

After getting the Colorado ***le in your name, with proof of insurance and copy of ***le, mail or hand deliver the application to;
DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE
DIVISION OF MOTOR VEHICLES
REGISTRATION OF HORSELESS CARRIAGE
1881 PIERCE STREET
LAKEWOOD CO 80214
As far as 'modifications' the (don't ask, don't tell) rule is in effect. LOL. Any problems along the way, pm me.

If you want regular or designer plates, street rod, etc. you can get them at county of residence dmv.

Actually, Boulder is a lovely city in a wonderful setting, on top of a mountain. Cold beer, wild women, card carryin' American Riflemen everywhere. ...................http://www.colorado.edu/

I think the cheapest way is to register it as a "Horseless Carriage" (need to be pre-42), then you can find a Colorado plate matching the year that your vehicle was manufactured "Year of Manufacturer" and register it to the Horsless Carriage plate. I jusdid that to my '27 roadster and all for a grand total of $12. Also registered a regular p***enger plate to my '36 Colorado plate for my '36 chevy. Boulder county or State of Colorado should have a website to help answer any questions. You will need a vin. number check for sure. Hope this helps, good luck!

Problem with "Horseless Carriage" plates is you can only "use" the car for parades, shows...according to the law, they cannot be used on a daily driver. Altho, I've never heard of anyone getting pulled over for having those plates on their hot rod, I guess there's always a first time IF the city needs additional income via tickets/fines. Besides, IMHO, "horseless carriages" were autos built up to about 1920...and they don't belong on a hot rod. That's why I didn't mention them in my original post.

When's the last time you were in Boulder Nash...??? I've yet to go to Boulder "on top of a mountain..." you mention.

As for the restrictions; I drive almost daily, and I am always in compliance. Compliance is a state of mind.

Besides; ......when, If, a law enforcer should ever stop me, I don't have to tell him where I'm goin' or where I've been, even in the People's Republic of Boulder, LOL!

When you go from a mile hi (5260 feet), which Denver is, to Boulder, (5344 feet), that's not much of a rise in elevation...and take no winding mountain roads to get there, then to me, that is not "on top of a mountain"...
Yes, you are correct, there are 10,000 foot plus mountains to the west...but Boulder is not on top of a mountain...Estes Park is on "top of a mountain..." Are you going to tell me Denver is "on top of a mountain"...???

Located at the base of the foothills of the Rocky Mountains at an elevation of 5,430 feet (1,655 m), Boulder is 25 miles (40 km) northwest of Denver.

22. All great info, Thanks.

I know Boulder is a hippy town, but my wife is due with our first baby in 10 days and Boulder is kinda a chill-out place to hang while Im working in the office.

Great that it looks like I can keep the UK ***les.... (For future use ahem :) if we go back).

While on this subject my wife wants to bring her nissan figaro (Google it... its a very retro town car). Now this one is a right hand drive car, any issues getting a ***le / registration for this (Its a 1992 car, so ***ume it will need emission tests - thats OK as it has those here in the UK as well)

Cheers guys, fingers crossed at getting everything all sorted.... Especially my coupe, no way thats staying here!

Better yet, get the "Horseless Carriage" plate. Mine runs $15.49 every 5 years and is the least expensive plate CO offers.

Bringing you late model will not be very easy, maybe impossible, It would have to go through alot of DOT and emissions issues, realize Wayne brought a Harley Davidson over from England and it had to be made American road ready, ie. new headlight and it cost $5k to have it americanized. He said he should have left it there and bought another here.

Boulder you will need emissions, I believe. When they do the VIN check they want to look at it. Hopefully, its not hidden somewhere.

don't think we still do the wt. - but its no big deal.

Welcome and good luck!

26. Ah makes sense, looks like its just the hot rod and the F250 coming with us!

Once you get it here and have plates on her, remember the second Sat of each month and drive it down to Golden, CO....head out to Pizza Hut, find a good parking space and get out the chair and enjoy......you will probably have to change the jets, since you are at sea level now.....<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />
