    Hey guys,

I just got orders from the Air Force to head out to Ramstein Germany. Can any German HAMBers help me with some questions about me bringing my 30' Roadster over with me?

What is the classic/antique registration like over there?

Are there exceptions for older cars during inspections?

Anything else i should know about bringing a hot rod over there?

    Thanks for the help!

    Matt

Way, way, back when I was at Ramstein in 68-70, the rules were very relaxed for servicemen RE the status of forces agreement. You could drive just about any piece of junk (especially beater bugs) you wanted on a valid US / Gov license and US Forces plates that you got on base. The Germans had far stricter regs and licensing procedures. I'm sure they would cringe when some of those American piles went by. You can only hope the rules are the same now as then. There are quite a few German HAMBers who will probably pipe-in to help you. Gary

Well if you end up visiting Bamberg (US Base) you can visit us nearby, US-Autoteile and Eds Rod Shop.
You'll be able to drive your rod on military personell plates but will still need inspection. Your rod will have no problem in Germany as it's an authentic build and classifies as an historic vehicle. Depending on where you get it inspected you may have to fit cycle fenders.

The traditional rod scene is larger in Germany than the street rodder scene.

I see you are a new member, with only two posts. There are now 471 HAMB members listed in Germany. You could private message some. Here's how:

Click on community in the upper black bar.
    Click on members
    Click on search
    Click on Advance Search
    Scroll down drop down wizard
    Under location, type in Germany
A list of the members listed will appear
Take your pick. You can even take a peak at their posts/threads they started

    Happy surfing

Ill make its own thread, sweet cheeks.. :D

Yeah i thought the same thing... good info to know IMO

Good info! It has a 2011 builders title for a 1930 Model A... so i hope it still falls under "authentic build"

Ill totally come out and see you guys! I have to serve a quick tour in Korea then i will be getting over there in October 2013. You guys need to inform me of the cool swap meets and shows over there.

Thanks for the info! I am actually not a new member but for some reason my profile got all jacked up and i had to re-open one. There was two reasons why i didnt want to PM a bunch of random people. I wanted it to be a public discussion and get different open information and opinions and i figured it would be good information for others wondering.

Thanks for the help guys! Any more i should know about hot rods and Germany?

  11. Is there a problem with driving it over there on the tags you have from here? I'm sure Germany's border countries drive across and vice versa. It may be that long term may have to be tagged there.

That is a good question and i wonder the same. I know that i can mail re-new my registration, if they would allow me to drive it on U.S. plates. Maybe someone could chime in on that.

Good luck on your tour @ Ramstien, did that from 65-68, Air Force. Base had a Motor Sports Club, covered everything, had a 1/4 midget track and a drag strip, alternate racing on opposing weekends. Thanks for serving, have a Parkbrau when you get there.

You're not going to be he first soldier to bring his car with him. There's a whole proceedure set up for you. You get issued with German tags so you don't stand out and become a target. You'll still stand out but that's another issue;-)
US Personell vehicles have their own inspection process which is different to the German one and is performed on base. It's stricter than it used to be but reasonable.
You won't be able to drive on your US plates.
Now when you get here do me a favor: don't drive in the fast lane of the Autobahn at 100mph for miles and miles filming your tach and the road ahead - look in your mirror - they'll be dozens of station wagons bunched up behind you waiting to get past.
Watch this. The car is OT but the video is about the Autobahn which was built in the 1930s.

A lot of this information is out of date years ago.

Check the title on your roadster carefully. If it isn't clear that it's a 1929/30 then you might not be able to drive it here. It won't be allowed on the road as a 2011. That's a definite. If it says it's a 29 rebuilt in 2011 then that will probably be OK.

Contact my fellow club member Stephan, 619 944 1147, he can give you the specs on getting your hot rod over there, also he can give you a contact number for my brothers in the german Lifters, so you can have someone to hang out with and go to shows.

Traditional Hot-Rod-Scene might be smaller over here in europe but pretty active.

    A few links for you:

The registration of a hot rod is possible but depends on the auditor (inspection authority). As far as i know (and as it's allready written on the last page), members of the us-services won't have to pass the german vehicle inspections. You'll get new number plates that have the look of official german numberplates, but you can see a few differences;)

Ed is absolutely right, don't ever try to cruz on the left lane of the autobahn. Even if you can do 140mph, you might be a traffic block ;)
