The pic were the hood is on the roof of the car is a fairley rare photo. Few photos exist with the car running carbs. This is a very early photo. The pic was taken at a match race. phoenix dragway i believe in alabama. I have the match race on video. The race was against nicholson. Noted t bolt racer Tommy mcneally gave me the video before his passing. He was from the area.
the 69 charger was back by the parts counter covered with a torn up car cover. the tires were flat and there was a 5 gallon gas can lodged under the rear of the car. we pulled the cover off and the car was a dirty mess. part of the building was being rented out to a body shop at that time. it was the area were the dynos were. we were able to get a air hose from them and air up the tires. we also got some wet rags and wiped the car down. the car was in amazing shape. it was all there exept for the engine and trans. when the car was all cleaned up tony and i took turns climbing inside playing gary dyer. one guy would play gary dyer while the other shook the car and made engine sounds. it was around this time that norm came back there to see if we had any questions. he had this look on his face that i can't really explain. he must have thought we were crazy. we had a great time. i haven't thought about that day in a long time. great memories.
That's a great article!! I would love to see that match race on video, that's the type of stuff I am looking for along with these types of stories. I believe the charger is in Minnesota still unrestored but gorgeous!
you got it. thats me holding up the body. i then took the pic of tony and norm. i have several pics that i took from that day. i have been looking for them all day. shortly after the mag appeared norm offered the car to me for 10 grand. about a week later i spoke to lenny about the challenger and i could have had that one for the same price. it was a case of coulda woulda shoulda. what a mistake.
Oh man, that would have been the deal of the century! I would love to talk to you sometime about this
That rules book is great, look at the ad for the GSS and Hemi darts.. Do you know where any of the Kenny safford era cars are? I had a chance to buy the Córdoba body. Sadly I didn't, but I know who did and rumor has it, it got junked...
I have an original LP of the match race between Mr Norm and the Ramchargers, has the original sleeve too! It plays nice and is really cool. Recently I came across footage of that race.. Very cool!
i also have video of the 68 charger crash. gary was burned bad in that one. the colt is in milwaukee.
tommy d the trailer shot is great. i have never seen that shot before. jeff look up the national dragster that covers the match race with don and roy gay at union grove. geoff stunkert i know has a copy. i do to but i would have to look for it. its an amazing story. i won't ruin the race results but it did end up in a fist fight with beswick who was there as a spectator. he was burned the week before at cordova thats why he was spectating.
Man we gotta talk sometime! Lots of info to cover... Here's a mag I found at a local garage sale a few years back
i have that race on video also. there are two mr norm cars in that pic. one became either the al desalvo car or the 64 that races with the midwest super stocks thats painted silver and red. i just found the national dragster. its from march 20th 1987. jon asher photos. the sad thing about this race i had several pics of the race that were private never seen before photos. i sold them along with some other mr norm stuff. the collector was mike gouida who lives in pennsylvania. mike also has a original poster of the ad for pants that was appearing in magazines. the ads had the challenger in them.
call mike to see if he still has the stuff. all of my footage is on vhs. i have no idea how to post it here. i would get ahold of john asher the photographer also.
Well if you ever need help with that, let me know. I would be glad to help. I just wish the 65 would surface!!
