Technical MSD Ignition Question

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Al T, Jan 8, 2017.

  1. Interesting. I wonder if Holley is going to build Unilite stuff or just throw the Mallory name on a whatever distributer.

I have always had good luck with the Unilite distributers. Knock wood. Lost of people have not. I bought a nearly new unilite at a swap meet in the '90s that had gone through a couple of control mods in very short order. I contacted my favorite catalog speed shop and they sent me the repair parts. I ran it for about 4 years and then when I wasn't using it someone else needed it, today a cap and rotor later they are still running it.

I think that its a ****shoot, you win or you **** out. There is no in between.

  2. Thanks Jim.

There are 2 different TDC's where the distributor is concerned, did you watch your intake rocker?

  4. Thanks.
I found TDC with the old distributor still in place so the rotor was pointing where it should be......... although off a wire as mentioned above. I shouldn't be 180 out.

Good luck. There may be a reason for the "great deal"'. I had lots of problems with my Mallory. Sold it "cheap" and replaced with an MSD ready to run distributor. So far, no issues.

  8. I never said I got a "great deal", I said I bought it slightly used. I think I paid what it's worth if it's a good distributor; if it's a price of ****...... I guess I bought poorly. Won't know until the plug wires are on and the timing is set.

  9. OK. Time for an update. Bad condenser on the distributor (and removing the shipping felts so the points open and close properly). Replaced it and the car now runs. Cleaned up the wiring to the relay for the fans, and now everything works as it should.......... and looks a lot cleaner. Just need to replace a leaky thermostat housing gasket and all should be good.

I agree with squirrel what the hell, he leaves his P/U behind and drives his race car to an event. But seriously those MSD 6A are great points and plugs both last longer. As far as coil I bought the best hipo coil I could find that would fit in the coil holder on my 57 Chevy and 65 Chevy, I don't like looking at these big multi-colored things with thunder bolts on them. The coil by the way was an accel. This was also 30 years ago. I still have the 6A it's going in my 65 Olds
