MSD info wanted

I recently bought a Chevy small block 5.7 V8. It came with an msd distributor (pn85551) it needs a brain box to tell it what to do.

My question is what box is best?

I know it needs either a msd6, 7, 8 or 10.

I plan on supercharging the engine and for normal road use.

Any advice would be great.

 

You need a 6-BTM or part # 6462, CHEERS, TR

 

Don't forget to order or purchase 4 rubber mounts. The unit should come with 4 chips for rev limiter-3000,6000,7000,8000 RPM, consider that if you would like to order a package of other chips at the same time.

Do NOT use solid core plug wires, TR

A 6-BTM, is that the whole kit or do I need a coil as well?

 

Here, www.msdignition.com, and the Blaster II Coil should work well, do NOT use the RACE VERSIONS of the MSD coils with the 6 boxes.

Yes the coil is a separate purchase, you will need a coil mount if you don't have # 8213, TR

BTM is boost timing master. You don't NEED the BTM, but if you are buying a box anyway, an extra little bit for the BTM is definately the way to go. The BTM can retard your total timing to compensate for boost pressure and is adjustable for any aplication where you will see increased cyl pressure.

Money spent on a BTM is money you will save on melted pistions and blown head gaskets.

I have used a MSD 6a box with & without the pro billet dizzy's. With great success.

The ones I've used have been with & without a rpm pill for max rpm.

Single stage retard same as the BTM, more built-ins, less money than the BTM.

The BTM is the perfect box for that application, for sure. I'm just saying that it isn't absolutely essential. I run a regular 6A on mine at 10# of boost, I just have to be more carefull with my timing numbers.

If I had to do it over, I would do the BTM....

If you want to get trick....use a 8977 with a 6al

Good point, "the same" is probably a poor choice of words. It can be used to accomplish the same end. Better?

 

I was wondering about that, I think for a blower the BTM might work better for the retard function, but I sure like the features of the other box. I wish they had those features in the BTM too. I had to add a start retard on my BTM

 

Don't feel like you are settling for second best with a 6 series unit. Even the street units have proven themselves in all sorts of racing and different uses. Most of the race units are not a good choice for a street car.
