I've got an MSD in my sbc 283. I'm using Speedway gauges. I plugged my tach lead into the gray wire recommended for tach signal and somehow the tach grounded and thereby setting a rev limiter on the distributor. I didn't know this feature existed until it happened. Got the rev limiter cleared, moved my tach lead to the coil, now it did it again. Anyone able to share their knowledge with me? I'm thinking of going tachless, would like to keep it, but can't afford this type of random problem. Any solution other than remove the tach?
To set the rev limit you ground the grey wire. Did you let it earth on something when you disconnected it?
I don't think I grounded the gray wire, but it's possible. I'm thinking my tach is producing some noise that is causing the distributor to ground. Currently, this is the second time it has set an unwanted rev limiter. I'm trying to diagnose so as to avoid unwanted limits in the future.
I ended up putting point distributors in my old cars, never have that issue.... but I have had to make a tach filter to make them work with some modern tachs.
Where is the grey wire now you’ve got the points connected to the tacho? If it’s still setting the rev limiter with the grey wire disconnected then doesn’t that mean that the distributor is at fault???
I first had the signal coming from the gray wire on the MSD pigtail. That caused the first Rev limiter. I then moved the tach signal to the coil, seems it has a new Rev limiter which I'm about to clear. I'm guessing it's the tach and yes, maybe a filter is necessary. Or just remove the tach, it's not a performance motor, I don't get near any redline.
