tucks tech post and additional help really fueled this project- these are the tanks to a 1981 stugis- not traditional but couldnt have done it with out this board
KICK ASS!!! Glad the tech helped! I've been wondering how your tank was gonna come out after that last pm... i'm laying here at home SICK off my ass and this just made my day ! I'm glad you pulled it off... I love the help I get on this board glad I could give some back and see it!!!!!!!! GOOD JOB! Tuck
the flames will stay as-is. The owner of the bike wanted it done that way. She is headed to daytona tommorrow- I ended up putting about 3-4 coats of clear on it and it came out extra shiney- the owner is going to buff it to get it even deeper. The picture really doesnt do it justice for the colors and shiney-ness. thanks again tuck
What kind of CLEAR did you use etc?? - you can sand it before you buff it with 1200 grit wet- that'll really make it FLAT. Tuck
I ended up using omni(ppg) mx15? clear. I stripped the tanks to bare metal, prepped them as recommended by the primer manufacturer with 220 and cleaned them with wax/degreaser and tack clothed them.(I tacked clothed everything and any flat surfaced in the booth any time before I shot paint) I then shot them with omni mp170 epoxy primer and prepped them as recommended by the manufacturer with 600 or equivelant scuff pad. I then shot 3 coats of ppg dbc deltron 2000 black base mixed at 1:1. waited for it to dry. I then followed the directions by tuck to layout the flames and masked it off I then shot 2-3 light coats of the red ppg dbc deltron 2000 mixed at 1:1.I waited for it to dry and layed the next set of flames out and taped them off. I then layed down the 2-3 light coats of caribean blue ppg dbc deltron 2000 paint mixed at 1:1. I sprayed light coats of the red and blue as to not have too much build up on th lines.I then waited for it to dry usually between 20-40 minutes depending on the temperature. I then cleaned any tape residue off with a very clean cloth. The has to be a better way to do this but Wax and Degreaser is NOT the answer, over base coat it acts like lacquer thinner. I then dusted it in Omni clear. Waited 5 minutes, shot a heavier coat of clear. then 1 other. I then waited for it to dry.
gears-n-grease try using 409 (yes the house cleaning product), it will remove tape residue, dirt, wet sanding residue, and oils from your hands, that might haved been tranfered to the base coat. And 409 will not harm the basecoat, primer, sealer, and clear. The best thing about 409 is that it will not leave any residue, after it has been wiped clean... J.
