It's not the mufflers that give a car a nice sound........

A straight 6 with headers but no mufflers does not sound nice...
More like a WWII fighter plane in a dog fight.

I put Brockman Steelpacks 12" and 17" on both my engines, after trying and modifying different length glass packs with gravel, nails, no packing, etc....
I like to hear the engine responding, but without the violent noise at higher rpm.

The porters look like they got the same welded sheet metal outer casing like smithy's.
I never liked the thin and muted resonance this creates hovering over each exhaust pulse.
You have to step back from the outlet to be able to record and hear it.

I like the heavy gauge bullet style casings better, like Brockman uses.
Cool metallic overtones, very unlike the dead thud of thin sheet metal.

Straight through mufflers under 20" length let you hear more engine, above that you get more muffler and silencing.

My favorites were the old Walker Continental glass packs, aka Blue Swingers. Nice deep tone, no cackle. Don't make 'em anymore but I took the Stude down and had the local shop put duals on it and they used "Jones" glasspacks, yeah, how generic is that? They were kind of "splattery" sounding at first and I wasn't diggin' 'em much but after I got them burned out a little they sound like the old Walkers. Nice deep rumble, not annoying at highway RPM. Since I got them burned out a little I can't drive the car enough!

MY old 33 flat head had 4 smitties, steel packs, and 4 2" pipes, straight to back bumper, got a ticket for loud pipes , showed cop the 4 mufflers, and he said don't car about that, I heard you 6 blocks away when you pulled out from a stop sign.

took two green hornets and welded them to the back of the 4 pipes to quiet it down some what.

    Beautiful sounding pipes though.

Sound clips on their site sound really awesome. Hope thats the real thing.

  11. I gotta think the examples in the porter site are real. 'course also gotta realize it's a info-mercial. I was informed about Porters by a friend who told me they're the real deal. They're going on my '56 Y-Block for sure. Think I'll like 'em but if not it ain't rocket surgery to swap 'em out.

Actually I think it was that Elvis impersonator in the Porter infomercial that did it for me   !

My dad used to run thrush mufflers. I have a set of short glasspacks on the 51. Not sure who they were made by. They came with the truck

Cherry Bombs will ALWAYS be my favorite...

("Disturbing the Peace since 1968"...just like me! Ha Ha!) :D

But, when I wanted my cars a little quieter, I'd use Walker DynoMax mufflers, and loved their tone as well.

  20. I'm interested. Are you an Alliance vendor?

  21. Thats how we run all of our stuff

  22. Three chamber Flowmasters on my roadster.
    Two reasons.

    1. A hot rod is about performance to me.

    2. I got the "look at me with no mufflers" thing outta' my system when I was 18.

  23. I install the mufflers to match the theme of the car. If the car promotes the fire belching need that's what it gets and if it needs the cacklin pipes that's what it gets. ACME MUFFLERS----NO MUFF TO TUFF !! WE AIM TO PLEASE >>>>.

I am running a set of Walker generic glasspacks on my flathead. They appear to be Thrush without the coating on them. They also sound like the old Walker Continentals.

has anyone got a 4 banger with good sounding mufflers ?? ............ steve

  29. It depends on the car. Either Thrush or Turbos. I;m running blown out Thrush on my Nova right behind the collectors now, my 46 ran Turbos, my 32 Chevy ran Turbos, my 40 ran Thrush with full length pipes.
Most of my cars ran Thrush, the price and sound were right.
