got flow masters on my 30 sounds like a muffled fart thinkin of going to smittys or old gl*** packs cant complain won the flows in a burnout contest
FlowMasters **** for trad rods or customs. They are for big inch high RPM muscle car wannabe's. They cause loss of low end torque and street performance. My preference is cheap swap meet well used straight thru's. Louder and more efficient.
my dad and unckle used to biuld their own called the gutted mufflers damn near a echo chamber but i remember when i was a kid they sounded cool
i got a set of generic turbos at the muffler shop for $15 apiece. i'm running them behind a 350 with 2 1/2" exhaust, i like the sound.
i own a muffer shop.......i like a brand call mello tone...there not as harsh as a glas pac and sound way better than a flow master...rooster
OK, you asked for it. Story-A guy comes to my shop and has me install a "nothing" 350 he got from his neightbor in his 64 Vette. He leaves to go to the muffler shop to get new exhaust w/Flowmasters. Comes back, and it sounded so bad my neighbor comes over afterward and says that's the worst sounding car he's ever heard. A week later he developes a rod knock, and I build him a pretty stout 400 small block. That sonofa***** was one of the toughest sounding cars with the SAME exhaust system. We couldn't believe it. I mean, it sounded tough! So, who knows what any particular engine will sound like with any given exhaust system. What was the question? Oh, i use gl***packs, Walker Dynomax Hemi and Turbo muffs, and Flowmasters
I'm running cherry bombs on my 31 with a mild 327. Sounds mellow for now but I would think they will get louder as they get more miles on them.
A set of cherrybombs backed up to the headers on a '50 Ford with a flathead.Nothing else.Loud? Hell yes.
I usually run straight pipes and smaller diameter pipe. My '93 Chevy runs cast iron manifolds, a stock Y pipe on a crate 350, straight pipe to stock rear single exhaust and sounds better than my buddy's $500.00 fancy ***ed exhaust. I like using a "H" pipe, "Y" pipe or "X" pipe, 1.75 to 2.5 diameter pipe (depending on car style/engine used) I get great tone, great power and positive comments about exhaust note.
I run cherry bomb header muflers I got at Auto Zone easy and quick to get off and on and they sound pretty good on the cammed up 302.
Same here and they sound awesome! The mufflers are a nice heavy gauge steel unlike the cheaper tin types.
Anything but Flowmaster's! Flatheads don't need mufflers, and everything else... Thrush Turbo's. I actually have 2ft gl***packs on my wife's Towncar. That 4.6 sounds wicked when it's wound up tight.
I started out in '98 with cherry bombs behind my flathead....too quiet, so I put on a pair of 12 inch gl*** packs I bought at York. They were ok, but it was still too quiet. Now I run straight pipes...I love it. They're just loud enough that I can't hear my wife tell me to slow down.
If you need to meet noise restriction, OR want semi-quiet with nice tune sound (or too old), I suggest basic cheap turbos. The 13"X2" from Summit is great for flatheads and stock SBC's and provides better torque than larger pipe sizes. Using 1 3/4" tailpipe is even better.
Cherrybombs off the *** end of a 455 buick in the willys there is no replacement for cubic displacement
healthy sbc, ****** supercomps 4ft.straight pipe and 14in. carquest dual chamber turbos. Good depth and loud enough to sound good. It doesn't sound like a small block.
Such a subjective issue with WAAAAY too many variables to be able to duplicate the sound from one car to the next. Here's my two cents: I sell both the Smithy (aka Smitties) and the Mellow Tone mufflers. I lean toward the Mello Tone mufflers because of a somewhat unique sound. Unless you are pounding the pavement with a real hipo type motor, you arent looking for the big flow to keep the gases moving thru the muffler. You just want the good sound. Some guys prefer no mufflers at all, particularly on a smaller motor like a flathead V8. I tend to think their hearing is going so they don't know what noise lever the car is producing. After any driving time at all, a NON-muffler exhaust is going to drive you batty, and forget listening to any tunes on the radio. Yep, the motor sure sounds nice, but it's overkill to the ears (and perhaps to your crabby neighbors). My preferred set-up is to run gl*** or steel packs further back in the exhaust system if you can. Go with 22" or shorter. Gl*** will have a slightly softer sound than steel, but the steel will last longer. The Mello Tones have some special stamped holes in the core shell that are produced in a winding pattern. You just have to hear them. They are a bit more expensive than the Smithys but they are made of heavier gauge steel. I stock both kinds. Hambers get an extra 5% discount BUT YA GOTTA ASK FOR IT! http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_speed-mellowtone.htm http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_speed-smithy.htm
On the '37 i'm putting together with a nailhead i'm gonna run the pipes all the way out the back with no mufflers....Longer the pipes, the better the sound
i have dual smitty's on my 39 chevy 327 sbc..and dual gl*** packs on my 68 caddy..i like te way the caddy sounds better than the 39..but the caddy also has a 472 big block pushing out of those gl*** packs..lol...i will probably take the smitty's off the 39 and replace with gl*** packs i think there louder...and use the more mello sounding smitty for my 54 chevy custom
got a 283 in the 66 impala with 2 inch pipes and no mufflers runnin from the rams horns. not the most powerful engine or the most efficient but its what I got.. for $700. and I like the way it sounds when I let off the gas
