I've got 2 1/2 dual exhausts with a crossover and a pair of 13" x 9" cheap turbos mounted right in front of the rear axle. Sounds good to me. If I want to race or just get attention I pull the caps off the cones on my headers.

    Hi!

I would run straigt pipes, or gl*** packs on a flathead, but
had a pair of cherry bombs on my 49 ford, with a pair of echo cans
at the end. Sounded mellow on idle but where loud when i cranked it up on higher rpm`s. A friend used a pair of Hollywood deeptones
on his 324 Rocket, an that sounded just right!

Cheap Turbo, had cherry bombs but the get to be a bit much on a 500-600 mi. trip. Could be a result of old age.

I've got Brockman mellowtones on my Y-block best sounding gl***packs ever heard ,and are made better ,but it all depends on your pipe size, your engine, ,and muffler location.

Ditto had a high compression 339 sbc in the early 70's with Cherry Bombs, previous owner, BAD *** sound, puked the motor replaced with a mild cam low comp turd and sound went to NO ***. I support your theory DR. G:confused:

Not the same series engine, but I had a Chevy 250 swapped into my '65 Tempest (don't worry, it was originally a 215), split manifold with duals, and just some cheap-*** muffler shop gl***packs, and it idled quiet. Get the R's up and it'd buzz a bit at the tailpipes, but the no muffler setup sounded like a Cessna taking off. My '84 DeVille with the HT4100 has split duals (2-1/4") with no mufflers, and it sounds like a mild Chevy small-block with small turbos on it. Tiny engines make tiny noises, even with 8 cylinders. The '55 is yet to be decided. The 265 stays, though.

  13. The flowmasters sound a little too modern to me for an old hot rod. I have the Flowmaster Super 40s on my daily driver pickup. They sound okay, but they resonate with a big droning sound at certain RPMs.

For older hot rods, I like either straight pipes, gl***packs, or the old "Turbo" style cheap oval mufflers. The Turbos sound like a typical muscle car hot rod like you would have heard in the '70s. The gl***packs have a more traditional '60s or earlier hotrod sound to them. The neat thing with gl***packs is that you can tailor the sound by choosing the right length and diameter of gl***packs, or even run two gl***packs in series if you want it quiet. Short gl***packs with small outer casings sound pretty close to straight pipes, but just quiet enough that you won't get a ticket or get a headache. Long, large diameter outer casing gl***packs have a deeper mellower tone.

If you go on a long trip with Flowmasters, that obnoxious droning sound at certain RPMs kind of drives you nuts. If you go on a long trip with gl***packs though, the purr of the exhaust sounds like beautiful music, and you'll want to just keep driving and driving. :D With gl***packs, there aren't certain RPMs that resonate more than others, so it just sounds good all the time at any RPM.

I had cherry bombs on my coupe and now have flows well they are going bye bye I still have the hollowed out bombs and the flows sound like **** on my car the bombs sounded awesome moderate cam, 11:1, 355 sbc good note and obnoxiously loud.Gonna see how dynomax race bullets sound real soon too.Since I flanged the exhaust at the muffler I can do that and love it.

I have an exhaust bender and do a lot of duals in my shop. I replace a lot of Flowmasters for customers, they sound like **** 99% of the time. I like to add a set of what we call silver bullets as resonators with the flowmasters. I am ***uming they are exactly like the mello tone, gl*** pack style but with larger spiral cutouts to mellow it down a bunch. I use them as regular gl*** packs all the time and they are great mufflers.
Cherry bombs and flowmasters are both junk. Why even waste your money on cherry bombs, they don't do anything.
I also get what we call a turbo pack. They look just like a gl***pack but have two chambers in them. I have them on my big block '65 Galaxie and they sound awesome with 2.5" exhaust.
I will never run cherry bombs or flowmasters on any of my own stuff, ever. I install exhaust for a living so I hope that tells you something.

I have had many sets of flowmasters and all have sounded different on each car with its own variables. I have a set on my 62 vette with ls6 supercharged 3" pipes duals all the way, sounds awesome. I have all types (chainers and traditionals) car guys that always want to know what I am running for exhuast because they like the sound (or so they say) and are suprised when its flows.
