The only "traditional model" I found on the website is the glasspack and the model called "traditional ol'school" , where is the other one you are talking about, not packed with glass? thanks for your help!

"A nice low tone sound".... if that means what I think it means, you aren't looking for any round tube muffler. An oval "turbo" muffler is going to be closer to what you want, based on my experiences....

Traditional model is the Traditional Ol'skool muffler. It does not have glass packing in it. It is just a muffler even thou we do have it listed on the glass pack page.

Say no way to the Cherry Bombs, They (Cherry Bomb) will never produce a muffler anywhere near the quality level of a Porter.

Buy the Porter steel packs and you will be very happy. :)

Wow you couldn't have put it any nicer? Like maybe "those Porters guys are great to deal with. Maybe you should give them a shot." or "All I use is Porter and they have a nice tone and also are constructed nicely."

    Thanks for the support.

I think a lot of the sound is also dependent on the engine, the cam, how rich it is running etc. Also makes a difference how much soundproofing you have in the car. I ran a pair of Smithy's for a few years, got compliments on how good the ol' truck sounded, but the inside drone at certain speeds was annoying. I don't blame the Smithy's - just the particular combination of all the factors in my truck that set up some harmonics. I eventually changed to some Dynomax's and was happy.
It's all pretty subjective, and hard to know if a pair of whatevers will sound the same on your car as on your buddy's.

I'm too picky to take some strangers opinion on colors or exhaust sounds. It's too personal of a decision for me.

I tell everyone to track down a car that YOU like the sounds of and ask the driver the particulars of his system. I ask even on cars that I don't care for to eliminate those that I don't care for. Go to a bunch of shows, cruise nights etc. and find out what you like. The fact that you are asking means that you won't know the difference in sounds from a Flowmaster and a glasspack.

Of course like everyone else responding to this post my opinion is the only true and valuable opinion on this thread.:D

I have flowmasters on my Edsel, while not exactly "traditional" it has a pretty healthy FE in it and i think it sounds great...

IF i was to put glasspacks on a vehicle, the would be porters. I have seen them up close and they have to be some of the best made mufflers around. They have a great glasspack tone...

Smittys are nice, but i dont think they are half as good of a muffler as a Porter.

These muffler threads all end up the same... it's like asking which is better, blondes, brunettes, or redheads.

    Porters...

    No, Smitthys....

    No Brockmans...

    No, Cherry Bombs...

    No, Flowmasters....

    Flowmasters are GAY....

    Well I LIKE 'EM!!!!

    Etc Etc Etc

Tommy's right - find some cars you like the sound of and ask the owner what they're running. Of course it's STILL not as simple as "what muffler sounds best". Engine type and size, headers or manifolds, muffler placement, pipe diameter, tailpipes or turnouts, compression ratio, etc all will make the same muffler sound different. Also with glasspacks (especially the cheaper ones) as they age the packing burns out and they get louder...

I'm a throw back to the 50's and I still love my Smitty Steel packs! That's right Steel packs not Glass packs!

    I'm with you.
My original 50s Smithy's filled with steel shavings and sparingly perforated (not louvered) inner tube have the most distinct and my favorite muffler sound I heard.
Porters, which have a coil as an inner tube, are my second favorite.

Before that I tried generic glasspacks, new production Smithy's and short Brockman steelpacks, all of which had louvers in various arrangements.
Brockmans were my favorite of that group. But I just never got used to the splatty sound louvers make on deceleration.

Here's a pretty good illustration of how much different brands/types of mufflers change the exhaust note. In the end its a crap shoot, just make an educated guess and hope you like how it turns out.

Other factors influencing the exhaust sound heavily are engine type, displacement and built, location of the muffler, diameter, length, material and bends of the header and tail pipes and shape of the exit opening.

If you go for a particular sound, you just gonna have to experiment and learn (my favorite method) or just get lucky meeting somebody who has your engine you like the sound of.

At least with my smaller displacement early chevy inline 6s it's really easy:
No mufflers with dual straight pipes out the back is the best exhaust sound by far...:p

I went with Flo-Pro Twister mufflers. I like chambered sound, but wanted a different sound than Flowmasters. These things are aggressive sounding and have a pitch all their own as the RPM's go up.

  20. But you forgot the "No Mufflers" straight pipes are best, crowd :D

You are quite welcome ;) What can I say, subtlety was never a strong point of mine and I just never did care much for Cherry bombs even way back when I was a youngster.

I did however have a pair of Walker blue bottles I was quite fond of.

Someone mentioned the Porters price. They are worth the price of admission, and will last a long time too. Not to mention there is a quite a history to the Porter story.

Never see e'm mentioned but I've had really good luck with Hooker Max Flows. Very low restriction, nice sound, and last well. They are a straight through glass pack, that looks like a Hooker Aero Chamber from the outside.

How about a glasspack on a ford 200? Cherrybomb is easy to get and great reviews.. what do you guys think? the longer the tube the quiet the sound gets. I want a nice rumble... what sucks is that once you try a muffler and dont like it the store wont take it back,

  30. Seeing that everyone hears things a bit differently, your on your own on this one. This should be about which one do YOU like best.
