Flow Masters on one, Thrush turbo mufflers on the next and then another one has glass packs and the last one, we’ll it’s not there yet.
2 1/2" Flowmaster Super HP2 behind a 460+" Pontiac. Tried going cheap with a couple different glasspack styles trying to find "the sound", which only wasted money.
Fore me it has to be glass packs on anything built before 1965. The Corvair turbo and "turbo muffler" along with it didn't show up until 1965. It was after that that Turbo and turbo style mufflers started getting used on Chevelles and other super cars. For me either Porters or Mellowtones if the budget allows or Walker glass packs if it doesn't. Cherry bombs always sound loud and cheap with no actual tone to me. I remember that when I worked at Bowdens auto parts we kept the Cherry bombs in a barrel out on the floor rather than on the shelf. 12.99 each at the time if memory serves right.
Stainless Specialties 21/2" bullet mufflers on my roadster with a Rodeck 427 sbc and oval 21/4" Borlas on my 67 Nova with L79/327. I've had the Borlas so long I can't find a photo of them.
Have used Flowmasters in the past on Novas, Malibus and Camaros. If space permits, the old style "off-road" mufflers for Corvettes offer a nice mellow tone and low restriction. They were an option on '56 thru '62 Corvettes. Usually run about $150 each.
I ran Flow Tec afterburners on my last 360 inch small block with headers and a X pipe, tail pipes out after the rear tires.
SBF with 2 1/2" Blowmaster 40's sometimes. Mostly open headers ! Thank you Harley Davidson Bike Weeks ... 6sally6
Vibrant oval stainless steel mufflers with resonators. https://vibrantperformance.com/streetpower-universal-mufflers-v1000/
Actually age determines it. Like, do you wear hearing aids? If so, does the machine sound just great to you without them? Or, do you think its a little quiet while everyone else stares? If you answered yes to these questions, then you should ask yourself --do i really need these?
Quiet mufflers, mostly. Walker Universal SoundFX mufflers on my Chevy II, and stock reproduction my Corvette.
Dynomax bullets on the 41, glass pack inserts on the bucket, most likely put the bullets on the J and not sure on the 57 pickup yet, haven't built the engine yet. Really depends on the engine specs, space constraints, type of build when picking a muff
Quiet is good. I really like to be able to hold a conversation when I'm out in the sled. I'm running Dynomax 20" turbos. They were really quiet for about a year and then got a little louder.
I have Flowmasters on the Impala, the DeSoto, and the Diamond T. The roadster, with it's tiny 276 DeSoto Hemi has none, straight pipes to the rear, with lots of bends which quiets it down quite a bit. It's quite a bit less noisy than any of the others, and there's no "drone" like the Flowmasters seem to generate. The Diamond T is awful at about 40 mph. The 454 in the Impala is quiet at idle, but at cruising speed is like riding in a bass drum. The engine displacement makes a big difference.
