Another “rare” intake I HAD in my early days(mid 70’s) was a 4 pot intake that was for Winfield carbs(not 2 barrel carbs)—rumors floated at the time was it ran in the Indy 500??.Traded that intake for 8 early s-w gauges with round, curved gl***. IMG_0272.jpeg IMG_1941.jpeg

Actually, although the two intakes pictured are being made again, they were both made many years ago. I owned the Mopar six intake, and still own an original Chevy Thickstun.

It would be interesting to see how the Winfields were mounted to this manifold when new. The carb spacing may allow as many as 3 of the carbs to be mounted with their float bowls toward the front… but the 3rd in line is way too close to the 2nd to be mounted this way. The square mounting pattern allows for carbs to be turned in any direction, but this only works as long as the turning/stopping/acceleration forces are kept within reason. Sideways carbs work fine on my T speedster… Indy 500 may have required different performance characteristics tho…;)

@Kevin Pharis, my knowledge of Winfield carbs is about zero although I’ve learned a bit about them following your posts. Here are some photos of the manifold shown by @Flatheadjohn47 with carburetors installed. I have speculated that the carbs may have been a collaboration between Ed Winfield and Stromberg engineers given the appearance of the float bowls and the four bolt, single throttle bore design. Information on the Miller/Fords is sketchy, not much at all is known about changes to the engines other than what can be seen externally.

And there I went ***uming the intake was built for Model S/SR carbs…! That is a nifty setup with clearly special built carbs. Would love to know more about how they work, if they have a traditional throttle plate or if they are S/SR type barrels…? Your Winfield/Stromberg theory might just be right. The special sidedraft carbs that Winfield built to go with his rocker arm Model B (1934/35-ish) overhead utilized Stromberg 97 internal br*** (I worked on some reproductions)
