I have a 1964 chevy c-10 that had a 230 ci in line 6. I took the 230 out and am looking at putting in a 327 daul quad moter that I have been biulding for the past year.......I have had 4 speed ******s before and Loved them but moneys a lil tight right now so Im looking at running the 327 on the 3 speed thats in the truck now.....Any thoughs on how well this ****** might hold up if I done lay my foot in it....Its really just a driver....but Im wondering if Im wasting my time on this 3 speed.

What do you really have to lose? I say run it until it breaks (if it ever does) then worry about getting a better trans.

three speed should do fine. also, they are more plentiful and less expensive than 4spds. later model chev. vega's used a four spd. that should hold up also, and might be less moolaa.

  5. The Saginaw 4 speed is a good transmission for a pickup if you're not going to run it too hard. The 4 cylinder Vega engine needed all the help it could get to get rolling, so the Saginaw 4 speeds used in the Vega had a good low gear ratio. I used to have one behind a 283 in a '55 Chevy pickup, worked well. As for the 3 speed there was a heavy duty 3 speed used in '70s Chevy/GMC that can be recognized by a 5th mounting ear at the top center, the other 4 line up the same as any other Chevy trans, so it will bolt up to a bellhousing that doesn't have the 5th mounting hole. Those are very good transmissions, got one in my shed that I would donate to your project if you were closer. You could probably find one closer to home for less than it would cost to ship the one I have.
