after 1800 miles on a rebuilt Muncie m20 ,I will get a funny buzzing or slight grading , grinding noise when I let out on the clutch ,just when the car starts to move. And Only in low or reverse , and not every time I shift ? So what's my problem ? I mean with the car?
Could be most anything , but a common problem w/those is a loose countergear shaft , if you didn't have to press the shaft into the case , it's too loose!! dave Try to be more descriptive...
Yep ,had to push it in with a arbor press! Makes the noise Only when creaping slowly and not every time only 1 out of 5 times ,why not in all gears ? Only low or reverse .
Yes the bushing was replaced with a new one ,but it was pretty tight on the old input shaft I used to install it. I hear that can cause a noise also ?????
Reverse is a sliding gear and Reverse gear doesn't have safety detents So if the shifter is adjusted too tight on reverse, there still can be contact while all the other gears function normally, so check to see if the "reverser" in the tail housing is fully disengaging. and also check for end float in the reverse countershaft gears [maybe the reverse idler gear is still in slight contact]
In 1st & rev. you're loading the counter gear at the rear of he case as well as the main shaft at the mid-plate bearing , also the mainshaft cage bearing [inside the input ] did you reuse old bearings ?? were all the thrust washers in good shape? did you check the counter-gear endplay ? W/O hearing the noise or exactly when it occurs , I'm just guessing.. dave
The thrust washers have a "tang" or locating tab that jets them stay put. Could be that it's eat into the case & worn the tab off & therefore spinning against the case making said noise. Just a probability. Best to dip into it and save it while there's still time. Flux
