Picked up 63-65 m20. Pretty straight forward on the id. However, on the passenger side below the casting number, there is roughly and faintly cast roman numeral lv (4) and v8. Anyone seen this or know what it means?

    pictures?

Looks like the foundry did various things in that location, without seeing exactly what you're talking about, we can guess...and even seeing it, probably will still have to guess.

Check the cluster shaft fit in the case, should be 7/8", they are known to get loose from years of abuse, the case can be machined for a new 1" replacement shaft.

The case can also be machined for a bushing that allows you to re use your current ,shaft. Bearings & cluster gear..

I doubt you'll find out anything about that without talking to someone who worked on that line, 50+ years ago. Good luck!

The round thing with the numbers in it is a date code. The roman numeral thing looks like it was engraved in a mold, probably a note to someone who worked there about something...and not something that would have been documented anywhere, most likely.

Later M20's had mold pattern numbers that were faint and in that spot on the trans. Don't think they were Roman Numerals though.
