I think Paul Cangialosi (fivespeeds.com) did a tutorial on the misfits on the early Muncies.

Just curious, it looks like you have a mix of Torque Lock (back cut) and OE style (straight cut) gears. What sliders are you using?

  4. It’s not your fault exactly,,,,that’s a different bearing part number,,,,which explains why it is a different bearing and won’t fit .
The Reputable Vendor should have caught that .

I watched the majority of his stuff on YouTube and it’s been super helpful. I’m not sure if I watched that particular one, but I know 63s have a smaller diameter bearing on the Muncies, T10s and 3 speeds. I dealt with that on my 63 Impala when I went from 3 to 4 speed.

This is a low buck endeavor and I’m using what I come up with. I have an Italian 3rd mixed with Asian gears and an OG cluster gear. I’m using torque lock sliders. I hope 3rd doesn’t give me any grief. I know this isn’t best practice, but I’m really focused on driving the car this summer.

Gotta dust your shoulders off and keep going.

I should have put new next to old and caught it. I usually do. The vendor should have know too. Oh well. I should see a new bearing from a different vendor, Paul, who confirmed his are the correct width, on Tuesday. I should have ordered from him in the first place!

    You’ll get it, Patience Grasshopper!

  9. With my background in machined parts, I tend to measure anything and everything even as a sanity check. I measured up my old axle bearings while they were still installed, did my research on bearing sizes so there would be no surprises. I brought my caliper to the shop that did my press work, before I plunked my cash down.

Despite the age of these transmissions, the bearings are typically metric. Measure up the old bearing or pieces it fits and look up the bearing number online from these dimensions, or post the dimensions here.

There's nothing special about the bearings in these transmissions, you can just get a quality bearing of the correct standard industrial number (unshielded), probably locally, and use it.
The specialty suppliers just do this anyway and mark up the part.

80mm OD, 35mm ID, 17mm W for the correct bearing. Unsheilded with a snap ring groove. The incorrect one is 21mm wide. They seem to be medium duty bearings. I fooled around on the Motion Industries website a little, but their prices were high enough that I didn’t bother calling the rep I use through work. Maybe he could have worked his magic for me, but I didn’t want to call in a favor for a personal project. I just ordered one through 5speed Paul.

I got the new gaskets and correct bearing mid week and got everything assembled. Things went pretty well aside from a finicky bearing retainer. It would fit great dry, but as soon as I put sealant on things, it would make a rubbing sound. I finally got it happy after about 6 cycles of disassembly/reassembly.

I wound up reusing the case, tail shaft housing, side cover, mainshaft, and assorted little stuff like shift levers and fasteners.
