Wow, I never ever really got into the name painted on a car (things like "Poison Ivy," "The Wanderer," "The HOMO Erectus," "Mr. Blue," and so on) nor murals or paintings on cars (like the low riders with the barbarian and the half naked chick around his legs on the hood and Jesus on the deck lid), but I have noticed in a ton of pics of shows that have been posted recently that a lot of guys are puting big names and murals on cars...is that making a comeback or something?

Man, nothing makes me cringe as much as the soda shop scene on the deck lid of a merc and now I keep seeing devil heads, orcabilly chicks, hearts with daggers, and other flash art type things on the back of cars...maybe it is just me but that is a trend I can really do without.

Yikes... [IMG]

Maybe I should turn this into a "show me your worst art on a car post" but then you homos would start hitting me with van pics from the 70's and then somebody would think "man how cool" and want to do one...hmmmm, my wife does have a new mini van.... [IMG]

2. They've been making a comeback since JJ put 'Fuckinitupagain' on the back of his Chev. for the world to see.

I think that was three years ago? And damn it man, there's nothing wrong w/ vans from the 70's! For what it's worth, I don't much dig it either.

3. Hmmmm, didnt see Jesse's until recently. I have however seen the trend growing in the last few months, I forget who did it here first?

My favorite is the truck with a mural on the tailgate of the same truck with a mural on the tailgate of the same truck...

6. Harpoon, got any more pics of the green 51?

The name thing is interesting.
Interesting to see it other places than on the quarter panels - quarter panels were the place for names back in the day. [IMG]

The 'Jeepers Creepers' on the back of the Imp is pretty huge-but it covers up some imperfections on the deck lid...

'orcabilly'!-that is so f@ckin' money!!!! [IMG]

Hey Merc, does that mean your against the big Selena tribute mural I was gonna put on the wagon.

There is a PT cruiser over in my area you would love. Its a full airbrushed scene of the garden of eden with Adam and Eve included covering both front and back door.

You guys REALLY need to see the bright gold flaked '64 4-door Impala with 4 hookers airbrushed on each side that roams the streets up here. It's badass...

one more thing...

Actually, I don't mind names on cars as long as it's not on the door. [IMG]

K&R, I think we should steal Merc's decklid off the 32 and get Bass to paint a picture of Byron and Foose on the back of it. [IMG]

Here's what my Fleetline had on it when I got it.
It now has "Praise The Lowered" where the heart and car was.
Ok, explain to me why you would have a picture of your car ON your car.
I'm considering getting a tattoo of myself...on myself.

18. It can look cool, provided it's well done. Most aren't and look like shit.

JJ's car had it on there when the first Motorcycle Mania came out. That had to be 3 yrs. ago.

Car names have always been around. Some folks like 'em - some don't. I could give or take 'em. To me it depends on the car they are going on and weather or not I am getting paid to put it on - LOL.

But seriously. Anything you can find on a race car will find it's way to a Hot-Rod/Custom no matter how much it morphs. They may have started on quarter panels but it doesn't take long for a rodder to break a mold....

I'm certainly not going to tell someone that they are wrong/dumb/gay if they put a name on THEIR car. If everyone built cars the same way we'd have quit tinkering with cars a long time ago.

Imagine two chopped, channeled, lowered, black Mercs sitting side by side at a show. One with nothing at all on it and one with flames, names and murals. If 100 guys walk by they'd be split into about 50 different opinions about BOTH CARS....Some hate to leave a car plain others hate too much goofy shit all over a car, still others would opt for something in the middle - and so on......

I for one have never been to a car show walking around with a buddy and heard them say - DAMN look at that car, I'd leave it just like it is.......

Usually that remark is followed by any number of suggestions - no matter how trifle.

I myself am guilty of said offence. I couldn't just "leave it alone" I'd have to change something - one thing at least, c'mon!!

So I say mural the shit out of it, I don't care. It's just paint right?

Dang Merc,

You all grumpy today.

Heavy flow?

I think "Trophy Whore" would look cool in Old English script across the boot of the 32. [IMG]

A buddy of mine just painted a giant flaming goat head on the hood of antother friends 50 Merc, along with the "real flames" style flames down the sides. Not my cup of tea, but it won a best paint award at the local musclecar show.

Around Pittsburgh there's a POS daily driver (perhaps a Cavalier) with a mural of someone's big, blonde-haired head right on the hood. I've seen it a number of times, but I still can't figure out if it's supposed to be Rod Stewart or Dolly Parton!

Reminds me of a joke...

Sweet young thing goes to get a tattoo.

She tells the artist she want's Jerry Reed on her inner thigh and Burt Reynolds on the other. ( Big "Smokey and the Bandit" fan). As the young lady gets into position the artist notices she isn't wearing panties but being a pro continues with his work.

The ink slinger gets done, hands her a mirror, and hears, " that don't look anything like Burt and Jerry!!!"

This is an insult to his ability so he goes into the street, grabs the first guy he sees, drags him in the shop, points at his work and says "Who the hell does that look like!"

The guy stares at the young women for a minute and says, "Well sir! That one on the left looks a bit like Burt Reynolds, the one on the right I would say is Jerry Reed but man, that one in the middle is a dead ringer for Willie Nelson!"
