Hey guys I am working on fabbing my front end on my "A" this evening, and was wondering if any on out there has pics of what they might have done.

I am fabbing based on mustang II specs but I dont have my lowers (tubular)yet so looking for info on just how they mount. just kinda wanna make sure things are all going to fit. I am using fully adjustables for the uppers, but some general demensions on both might help. They just dont put that stuff in the speedway catalog!!!!! I am also curious how high my front coil-over might mount in relation to where the upper a arm tube will be.

This seems to be a big project here for a first time hot rodder......thanks for the help

AK Miller had an independent suspension on his Lakes Bred Hot Rod. He used a '49-'54 Chevy front end on his. I don't condone this type of behavior but there are instances. Continue with the flaming.

i guess i should have probably added this to my last post, but I am trying to use as many parts from one of my dirt cars as I can.......thus I have mustang spindles, brakes, all that kind of stuff......I am trying to simulate a hiedts style suspension but with out the 2500 dollars..........

why ya gotta make fun of the new guy???

  7. We're pretty uptight about ifs on hot rods around here. Fendered or not in my opinion.

Don't give up on this site. Keep looking around and you'll find the answer. Maybe IFS is not the best answer (maybe it is?). Have you looked through the cl***ifieds? You could probably set up the whole front end from what Hamb members will sell you. Look through different build threads and make sure that's what you want. In my opinion, there is nothing prettier then a Early Ford Transverse leaf setup. The can be put together also in less then an hour. Keep it simple. Good luck!

  13. Very helpful, you can and will get the best info in the world here (some **** too but thats all good fun)

And like JefferyJames said dont give up, and good luck

so none of you guys run Hiedts style front end? Is that just for rich yuppies?

When I started my build this summer, I asked a buddy who builds rods professionally now....(lucky *******).....what he would do.....he said this

"if you just want a rough riding old hot rod then build it vintage.....if you want something you can drive and enjoy run IFS" so I started down that road. That pic above is pretty ugly, but I think tubular arms and some nice coil overs would look pretty slick.

I've got a '31 coupe with a MII IFS,cycle fenders and radial tires. And, if you don't like it, TOO DAMN BAD, it's MY car! M1Racer, I'll PM you some photos as soon as I get a chance. I'd hate to insult so many of my fellow HAMBers who are so busy copying what was already done 60 years ago.To each his own, build what You like.

hey thanks.....cant wait to take a look.....

here's something to think about......When I was growing up, we had a coupla old orange tractors (Alice----chalmers?)..... the one that worked the best had a 350 chevy powering it.....when we had to plow the garden, we used the tractor with the two 350 chevys powering it. just had to pull that ****er back and forth across the garden. I learned to drive pulling one of those tractors up and down 3 mile of road.....all original tractor with a chevy 350........worked just fine and it got the job done

  19. I have a 40 Merc with the Hiedts "economy" A arms. They are samped and welded instead of the tubular stuff. A little cheaper and they work great. Much better than the stock Mustang II. You get rid of the stabilizer struts which can be a big pain in the *** and it looks better too. I do have fenders(it would look pretty wierd with out) but the econ arms do look better than the stock set up.
Take what some of these schmoes say with a grain and salt.

Mustang II on an open wheeled A? Not to sound like a jerk but are you just wanting to go fast and don't care what it looks like? Then just buy a Fox body Mustang and let someone who wants a nice looking car build the A.

Putting IFS on an A, especially an open wheeler, is like putting a Ricer Wing, Fart Cannon, and Shogun Body Kit on a 49 Mercury.

I hesitate to step into this, but the essential argument is: street rod vs traditional rod.

If you want more street rod style (IFS, billet wheels with wide low profile tires, late model fuel injected engine, shiny paint, leather interior, etc) then make that your choice if you like it.

The problem is the HAMB is for traditional style (solid axles, bias ply tires, old engines with mutiple carburetors, all levels of paint form primer to finished, mexican blanket interior to rolls and pleats) and that is why you are being encouraged to follow that way.

Don't be so sensitive and thin skin. There is wealth of knowledge and talent here, but you need to understand where people are coming from.

That is my attempt to be nice and explain it as clear as I can.

To much time on the dirt track.......used to tun cars with fenders they just get ripped of.....open wheel is the way to go...

I just need to get over that way of thinking.......Its not "GO FAST TURN LEFT"

  23. some of you guys need to lighten up. you're just as bad as these concourse, 100 point muscle car ****s. Lay off the guy. Jeez. I think he gets it.

This place is a wealth of knowledge for traditional hotrods and customs....its a bummer sometimes, but getting flamed just might turn your ifs to an I beam hahaha.

hey if nothing else I got you guys to give me some input that is what I was lookin for, and that is why I come here.

this "rod" it dont believe will be a street rod, I do want it to go fast but I also have a soft spot in my heart for primer.... I need to get some pics up of the progress and I will make sure I throw a towel over the front end!!!!

    Good for you man.

I run a MII under my fat fendered chevy coupe. It's the only car I have and I drive it everyday. It also has tilt and a/c. It is rusty and has ****py looking flames on it. But it's mine and I am doing what I want with it. I can tell you that the MII is not gonna be in it for much longer as they aren't as durable as I would have liked. Some will argue the opposite, but I have almost 100k on the car now and thats over a 4 year period.

All I can say is build it the way you want. If someone don't like it, maybe they will offer up some dough to help with the cost of what they would like your car to be...
