Hey guys, I just picked up a frame that has a 9" Ford rear end and a mustang II front. The rear end is 5 lug, and the front is OE mustang II 4 lug with disc brakes. My questions is this! Will an aftermarket set of mustang II spindles fit in place of the original equipment one's on here? This is super nice frame and as good as I would build. I've never built a rod using OE m II suspension, Only the aftermarket one's......and I would like to use this frame, and I have a good set of wheels and wide whites for it....gonna put a 39 Ford truck on it. I have a set of SSBC disc's and caliper's for m II spindles from an old project.
If I'm not mistaken ALL 74 and later Pinto and Mustang II use the same spindle and any aftermarket MII spindle should interchange, unless it's some MII "Design" that uses different Ball Joints. You should be able to put the SSBC disc's and calipers on the spindles you have, unless they are the early Pinto type which isn't likely.
You may not have to change the spindles... if all you're trying to do is change the brakes to five bolt, just buy the rotors that are designed to do that. I'm sure there are vendors here who would be happy to help you out with a set. Otherwise, to answer your question, new spindles should work on the old stuff. Do you have caliper brackets? If you're going to retain the original strut rods, we sell a bracket kit to do that.
Thanks guys, after looking a little closer, the 4 lug aluminum slots on there are dated 1978. I'm also guessing they are original. I may replace the spindles anyway as they are pitted where the bearings are, and I just found a new set locally for $120. Gonna pick them up tommorrow and see if it all works. Mott
Watch what spindles you buy. There are forged, and there are cast and judging by the price you quoted, they are offshore cast crap. Beware!
I can't remember exactly how it worked now because it was about 17 years ago, but I put "late model Camaro" disc brakes on some stock Pinto V6 station wagon spindles on my '54 Chevy pickup that I had installed a Fatman Fabrications front MII crossmember on. I think I got the disc brake setup from "Engineered Components Inc." It used Camaro rotors from the '80s I think, and special bearings or special seals. Everything bolted right on. The only thing goofy about it was having to use "bubble flare" type fittings to connect to the stock GM brake hoses. I wound up with a 5 on 4-3/4" bolt pattern. I also remember having to do a tiny bit of grinding on the spindles to get clearance for something. The brackets for the calipers were cut out of some really beefy steel plate and bolted right on. There are also ways to swap in Granada or Monarch discs I think too, but I wanted the GM brakes. The Camaro brakes work great by the way. I'd give them a call at Engineered Components Inc. They seemed like they really knew their stuff (or at least back then they did).
Speedway sells 5 hole replacement rotors for about 40 bucks a pair or thereabouts. Seals and bearings , too.....
actually speedway rotors are more like 40.00 ea. but still a good deal. nothing wrong with the stock must 11 stuff if the install is clean.
I just got back from picking up the spindles, and they are forged. The guy I got them from from is a retired swap meet'er and gosh does he have alot of stuff and crap. I saw alot of stuff in his shop and made note of it so I can call him back when I need it. The SSBC rotors fit perfect on the new spindles. Now I'm in business.
