Projects My 1951 Mercury Restoration Part II

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Pro Stock John, Jan 9, 2011.

  1. Hmmm wasn't there a car that had lights in the grille like this though Dave?

  2. They´re too big for `57 Chevy items, or?

  3. Yeah, it seems familiar, but I couldn't place it right off. I recognize the bar itself as the same bar you have picked up but the overall look reminded me of another one I couldn't place. I know I have seen a few that used spot light buckets as the lights, though and that one seems to have lights about that size. When I get a chance I'll go through my pics and see what I can find.

The look like Henry J grille end pieces/ parking lights to me.

  6. Veel dank Rik, looks like '51 Henry J grille?

  7. Well, I looked through all my Merc pictures and could not come up with one that had a grille that used spotlights like I was thinking I had seen. I think you might be onto something with the Henry J though, like Rik suggested. Looks like they would work to me. :)

  8. Mike aka Invisible got your VM I will try calling tomorrow! Need those interior screws to put my my moldings back in!

Thanks for the link, I just read both threads, nice changes to the car. Good luck with it.

  10. Thanks man, I'd like to hear more about your Hudson they are my other favorite car from that era.

  11. Right now the Merc is in winter hibernation, trickle charger attached, waiting for better days... THEN grille fab, and I think 2" drop spindles in the front (remember I am GM frame)...

  12. We have been hijacking that other guy's thread about his '51 so I'll put it here...

I'd like to see more side shots of folks with Carson's flatter rear glass... Any out there?

Do you guys think my car would look better/ worse/ don't care with flatter back glass? Mine has to come out again anyway I have to shave down the top corners at some point...

From the pictures you're showing us, the back window you have seems to flow pretty nicely with your roof. If you have time to take a side photo with the rear glass in the center of the photo, eye level about the center of the height of the glass....go for it.

  14. Joe that's a good idea, I will do that.

  15. I have a bar to pie cut and re-weld for my grille, since it's painted I assume it's stainless. I should have it tig welded right? Just making sure.

  16. Looks like the bar you that have that has more v to it is shorter than the one you have propped up in the opening? I wonder when you v the one you have propped up if the ribs will run at an inward angle? I'd like to see the more v'd one propped up an see the angle from above. If the v of that one matches, what about cutting out the center and using that and cut the ends off the longer one and weld them onto the v'd center?

  17. I beleive the way it will be v'd is to leave the center ribbed section alone and just bring in the ends like OZ did on his.

When I buy interior screws for the cars I upholster and it is a car for which you can not get a screw kit, I buy a 567 chev four door or a 49-51 ford 4 door screw kit and I always have lots.

  19. Well, hmmm….look at me. Sure enough. I was reading the thread on my phone earlier and when I clicked on the photo above, it took me to John's Photobucked account and all the other grille pictures as thumbnails below. I assumed they were new pics. Looking back now from my laptop I see they are old pics from when this was all discussed several months ago….and I was in that discussion. LOL Maybe I'm turning into 50 First Dates/Groundhog Day and each day starts a fresh slate for me and I forget what has gone on before. Never mind my previous post and back to the regularly scheduled program. (hides his head in shame LOL).

  20. I just keep talking about something until I do it, and sometimes those conversations are over a year long hehehe.

Once they salted our roads Miss Mercula got perma parked in the garage.

One bar is too short, though it would be interesting to take that one and put some things on the ends....

  21. I'm thinking a bit about my dash:

    1955 gauge insert maybe?

I bought a cut-up '51 Merc dash for so I could study the lines, and frankly I don't see any reason for me to put a stock dash back in. I already have aftermarket gauges, so I could just pick something else and get nicer gauges.

Status of car: Maybe I can schlep the car to my buddy's house before I go out of town in 2 weeks but if not right after I'll have him fab the grille.

  22. '54 Olds might look good if you want a bit more flash than the Chevy. The trick will be the depth of the dash due to the wrap around windshields of these cars vs the flatter area on the Merc. I'm sure wrapping them around into the door panels would look good.

  23. That's pretty nice, I'll have to study those dashes more Dave.

  24. I have a '56 Olds dash that I can measure for you if you decide you'd like some numbers. Surely it's pretty close in size to a '54.

  25. I should study some more pics of the dash first and see if it's the one. :)

  26. Over at my buddy Joe's house for the grille (I will finally get it done) and some other stuff...

    Before:

    Center console has been removed!!!!

My dash is not a repop, it's a stock one that's been completely filled in. From the backside:

  27. Can't wait to see it with a grill in place!!

  28. Looks like I welded that dash John....sorry about that. LOL that looks like lots of yucky welds to try to clean up if you were going to put a stock insert back in there.

Excited to see you get a grille!

  29. I don't plan to put my current dash back to stock, it's too re-worked.

One idea that I think would look cool would be a custom insert with a big gauge to use the factory bump and a few smaller ones on each side.
