Projects My 1951 Mercury Restoration

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Pro Stock John, Sep 2, 2008.

  1. Maybe I'll talk Paul into painting one of the rims we are getting rid off that bronze/copper idea I have in my head, just to get it out of my system.

I agree with you 100% if you leave the skinny whites on her. Red makes it pop
just as much as the wide whites. I'm glad that your buying the WWs. I don't care
what you choose, your still gonna drive one kool Merc.

    Happy Trails,

    Mick

That's what I plan on doing for my '52 as well. If I keep the car long enough to paint it I plan on spraying the body with a dark red wine color. The engine is painted the stock 50-51 Coppery Gold and that's where I am drawing that color from. I figure if I can bring that color to the wheels and a bit in the interior it'll tie it all together. Nice choice!

Your car is going to look fantastic, John!
I think the copper or bronze could work well. My advice would be to use a color that would look good as a pinstripe or scallop on the body color.
That said, I thought bathtub green would look bitchin on the wheels of my black-and-gray
'53 Chevy. (It was the original color of my car.)
I was wrong - they just wash out and look white. No "pop" at all.

if it were mine, i'd go with the bronze or a lighter blue

  6. Mick,
I'm definitely ditching the current rims/tires (anyone around Chicago want them?), and I have Diamondback 3.25 white walls on order.

I'll try a rim in bronze, see what happens.

I wish these hubcaps I have didn't need so much work.

  7. Bronze or kopper will look very good with the wide white walls. It will be a wonderful combination with the dark blue body. And how about painting the center of the Studebaker wheel covers in the same color as the wheel?

Thank you John for making a fine car out of a pig.

  11. Thx Nads.

w/flash, I really don't like the blue car/red rim look, just personal...

  12. I'm not feeling the red rims either. Looks to 4th of July parade to me. I do like the red rims on a black car. I think black or body color.

  13. Would be interesting to see one painted bronze/copper though eh?

Update: electric fan showed up. 16" Spal unit.l

  14. Update: Rear window trim is here, thanks Gary. We are going to try and have it polished before it goes on the car.

Matt has been helping me source weatherstripping so I think I can order it today, thanks muchacho! If you have a Merc that you are doing, you might want to work out a consulting deal with Matt, because he's been there and done that, and knows where to get stuff!! Now he didn't ask for the deal, I pushed it because I value people's time since I own a services company.

Still have not found 1951 Ford grille curved sections. Might have to go back to the Sam Barris tribute grille then since I have all those parts I think.

    Pro Stock John,

There is a shit load of Mercury window trim items right now on E-Pay.
    Search under 1949 Mercury.

  17. Thanks, I need front windshield trim but I only buy stuff like that from people on here.

Give me a list of stuff that you need, I'll buy it off of Ebay and then sell it to
you. LOL!!! Just having some fun.... Back to Merc business.

    Happy Trails,

    Mick

  19. copper/bronze for the wheels...would look great with the centers of the hubcaps and also with the dark blue paint...you would need a hint of it in the interior too I think make it right..maybe even just in striping on the dash?

  20. Yeah we'll see on the interior, I don't want it to be mostly white but I know that a mostly dark interior is not era correct either (from what I've seen of pics).

I'm thinking we'll try a dark bronze on a wheel and see how it works. But my 'caps are not nice enough to put on the car, I don't want dingy 'caps on this car I'd rather run nothing for now.

  21.
  22. I'm striving for a pre-1955 look for the car, but I have made some compromises. I am still running the twin sunk antennas on the passenger rear quarter, though we eliminated the built up lip on the one side. I added a Hudson fuel filler door just because I wanted it. As for the interior, I'm open to what would be period correct. I have power windows so maybe I'll have to get levers that just activate the windows but look like they twirl around.

Update: Ordered final weatherstripping pieces for that that I did not have. Again big shout out to Matt. My rear quarter windows and vent windows are fixed so I have to work with them for now. I eventually want to source and install vent windows that open up front.

    Don't sweat it.
Power windows (hydraulic) were an option on the 1951 Mercury.

  24. I've been looking for a set of original power window switches for my Merc project, but they are pretty hard to find.

  25. Hmmm now I want a set of those too... Or sometime similar... grr.

  26. The Jag XJ6 window switches are chrome and oldie style looking.
That's what I'm putting in mine.

  27. Radial Tires ???? Really ? Are you going to put the stainless back on around the windows ? What about the windshield ? I have noticed its a pretty popular thing these days to just put universal rubber seal in place of stainless trim around the windshield. Which route are you going? Sorry John, had to ask after I just read about the radials.

  28. Radial tires = Yes. Trim around windows = Yes. I bought the complete rear window trim from Gary S. on here, Matt Townsend in CA pulled together the side trim I need along with the weatherstripping, and I'm still looking for the windshield trim thought Owen is looking for me.

I'm not going to do any more chrome on the side of the car for now, I'll need to live with it for a while. Hubcaps are next, and then grille.

    Then interior.

  29. I think it will look great! Try painting one of the wheels gold.

  30. When you say " trim " are you talking about the stainless that came on the car ? Or another kind of trim?
