Projects My 1951 Mercury Restoration

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Pro Stock John, Sep 2, 2008.

  1. I have too much going on in Robby the Robot... power window switches, and some other switches.

  2. damn I didn't know that, just make a nice panel out of turned aluminum or sheet metal and spray it the exterior color.

  3. I kinda want to drive the car for the remainder of the year and save up my pennies for an interior and leave it for now.

I also have parts for a custom grille, and need to have someone fab that up for me.

  4. right on ,good luck with the rest of the project.

John, this is the first I've checked on you for awhile. It looks like you're getting close. Pretty exciting huh. Did you end up using my bumper? I hope we can get together when you get it on the road so I can check it out. Good luck and keep up the good work! Tom

  6. I sure did Tom, it will be on the front of the anytime now.

Just curious, should the headliner at least be installed before the glass goes in?

is he thinking about 55 pontiac side trim???

  9. I've heard that about the headliner, but I think Matt said it's possible to finagle it. There is no way I'm doing the interior before the glass goes in.

I bought some '49 Caddy side trim from Ether (Rik's idea), I will have that in mind for the near future.

    1) Get car back
    2) Get glass in
    3) Drive the f out of it
    4) Floating grille
    5) Interior

  10. Rear shots, we have bumper!

It looks like we are getting close to see a Pro Stock John grinning from the drivers seat photo.
That bumper looks great in it's new job with it's fresh and shiny chrome too.

Lookin' good, John...You've done the old girl proud. Time to ice the cake!

What skirts did you decide ... and are they ready to go on?

The Caddy side trim is a great choice. Are you still planning on adhesives?

Any development in the grille department?

  20. Yep '53 Chrysler tail lights, idea from flamedabone.

Yep Hudson fuel door, from Flat-top Bob.

Skirts are the ones that were on the car to begin with. They are painted.

I haven't messed with the '49 caddy trim I got from Ether yet.
Grille is planned to be like the Sam Barris Mercury, I have an entire '51 Ford grille to use and I bought some extra rear pan pieces (the ridgy parts).

Thanks for the comments guys, they really get my blood pumping (in a good way).

I think what is left is maybe some little detail work on the front end paint and then putting on the front bumper. maybe wiring up the new electric fan. That might be it?

  21. Wow John, The car really looks amazing. I bet you can't wait to get it on the road with the windows down, and put some miles on it....

Went and inspected the car this morning. Bumpers are on, white walls are cleaned, car is just about ready to leave. These pics are from Paul's phone, but I did take some other pics on a camera and will try to load those tonight when I get home. Car looks totally awesome in person.

Looks great, John! You probably don't remember me, but I met you at the GMHTP event at Bristol back in like '00 or '01. I worked for Year One/Next Gen , and had a black '97 SS at the time. I had no idea you were into older stuff too.

Kongrats on the progress... Soon you'll be driving around one bad Merc.

  30. Very nice! It will be a real pleasure to see it finished with grille, hubcaps (and the Cad side trim?).
