Looks awesome! I can't wait for the non-teaser pics... :)

  3. WOW!! John looks like it is going to be worth the wait. Paint looks great! Congrats on getting one step closer.

  4. Again, thank you guys, you all know a ton about these cars and I'm just a knucklehead who just so happens to have a chopped Merc on his list of all time dream cars.

Not sure what day I can swing by there yet, Paul said he was going to paint the doors and hood on Tuesday.

Looks awsome. I'm sure you have a sense of relief finally seeing some color.

  10. Yeah the last time I had a car stripped to bare metal and redone was in 1995 I think it was also a wait.

Let's see, I sold the Desoto grille, threw out most of the tweed interior. I'll have to get to those items at some point.

What are your plans for the interior ? Custom re cover, modern seats, or some of the cover kits for the stock seat frames ?

  12. I bought front bench and matching rear for the big redo, I would redo the interior in a pre 1955 way.

  13. I pm'd a few folks but here is my next question.

I did buy the rear window rubber from one of the big vendors. What should I do for the front and side windows? Do you buy the original rubber and trim it down, or take a big roll of the black rubber stuff and just make the window rubber/seals?

Got yer PM, figured better to respond here. Are you talking about the rear quarter windows? There are a couple different ways to go about it, ranging from easy to right. Look at a stock Merc at a car show, with the amount of time and money you have into this, and if you are going to really try for "period" you are going to want to aquire the original swing out wing windows, which are comprised of the window frame, garnish moldings and all that jazz, and cut it down to make all that work. It's a ton of work, but on a car like yours, it's the way to go. I (and a bunch of other folks) just glue the rear windows in from the inside, put your garnish molding in and run the flexible door edge molding around the windows. Looks good, is cheap and easy, but I've never had my "car" car yet, the one I put a ton of work into no matter the cost, and when I do I'll definately try something like the swing out. The devil is in the details.

  15. I think I need to run my fixed quarter windows for now, and plan to redo them in the future. I don't have the movable factory quarter windows and I might have to rush to get stuff done in the next 1-2 weeks...

I think there are some for sale on E-Pay right now.

  17. "I think" I couldn't find them. :)

I think I need some rubbers, er... Wind seals. I'm going to call Matt to get it clear in my head, and then take an inventory.

  18. For the wing windows I used a set of repop seals and trimmed them to fit. They are good and I think I got them from Carpenter. For the side windows I got the felts from restoration specialties and will use staples to install them. They also had the bat wings that are in the rear of the door as well as the channel in the vent window uprights. Good luck and keep us posted. Chad

  19. Matt, thanks for talking to me this morning!!!

I'll take a quick inventory tonight of the seals I have and what I still need to get. Then I'll call Matt's buddy to see if he can get the stuff I need.

  20. Lookin good John!!

  21. And Dave finally posts. :)

I did a seal inventory, and I have only bought the rear window, trunk rubbers, some hood stuff, and nothing else. The stuff used for my rear quarter windows looks like a P with the bottom of the round part cut out.

  23. LOL Sorry about that, John. I haven't had much time here lately, but always lurk this post to see how it's coming. I am sure you are stoked to FINALLY see it in color. Can't wait to see it all together and the transformation you have made....totally for the better. Gives hope to all those oddly done Mercs that are out there dying to be adopted and set right. :D

  24. Thx Chaos. Given how the seller describes the parts, I think I'd rather buy some that I can see first hand or from one of you guys.

Like I was telling Matt on the phone, I like how my car has turned out. Yeah I would love to have flush-fit skirts and I think Mercury Charlie's rear window is layed down better than mine, but in the end I'm pretty darn happy.

  25. This is the weatherstripping that my Merc had for the rear quarter windows:

Just wanted to say awsome job, the research and questions are really gonna pay off!!

  27. John,
Can't wait to see it completed. Are you planning on driving it to the HAMB Mercury Gathering?

  28. Not sure, I hate to make a big deal about going to stuff until I'm really driving the car on a regular basis.

I ordered the front windshield weatherstripping and the hood bumpers from Doug @ MercuryLand. I still need the rubbers for the vent windows and quarter windows. Also will be pulling the trigger on an electric fan pretty soon too. I will be visiting the car Monday and will drop off seats, glass, weatherstripping.

  29. My body guy sent me a pic of the buffed hood:
