Neat car My advice- exploit the SBC for everything it's worth. Cause it can do something the flatheads can't, which is 400-500 horsepower for cheap, while dressed to look like a period mill and sipping pump gas. There's one great thing about hot rods. You can argue about which flavors are best, traditional versus billet, roadster versus coupe, and on and on and on. But ultimately, it's hard to argue one thing. The car that's ahead at the end of the race. good luck
I have a 302 Ford powered '27 Track T with a Toploader 3 speed tranny. I wanted to go with a 4 speed, but couldn't fit it in my budget. It has 31" tall tires with 2.79 gears. My findings were that first gear was totally useless, and I use the car as a two speed by taking off in second and shifting to third. On flat ground you can take off in third gear easily. My point is that a four speed is not needed in a car as light as yours will be.
Thats why im running the turbo 350, i figured that at most it will only weigh about 1400lbs, so thats why im keeping the set up I have.
Hey guys just got a whole bunch of pics back thought that you might enjoy them. As always comments and suggestions are always welcome. And i before you say anything, yes i know its fiberglass.
So what its fiberglass, so what its got a SBC, it's your car run what you want, opinions are like assholes, everybody has one and they all stink..There is'nt a whole lot of room for 3 pedals, not saying it can't be done just saying that a T can get tiny real quick. Move on with your project, drive it when its done, and trust me if you ever brake down on a long haul you will have an easier time getting back on the road with a SBC or a 302 than a flatty or an olds rocket. And trust me once you get the bugs worked out and your driving do you think your smile will be any bigger if your running a flatty or a four speed.. I know you asked for opinions, but becareful what you ask for some peoples opinions can be pricey, or stupid, kinda like my stupid opinion.. I'm sure I will catch shit for this so do what YOU want and have fun with it, thats what its all about...
just out of curiosity... was there any specific reasoning behind building it so long and setting the motor out a ways and the radiator even more so?
The seat itself came from a 1984-85 caravan, i believe it is the middle seat, If i remember correctly i chopped about 7 1/2 inches out of it then welded it the whole mess back together and it fits perfect Hey man, the more I build the car and the more I see the progression the more I agree with you totally. I just like to have others input so I can see exactly what people are doing with their rides and try to stay on the different side of things. Well when I set out building the frame with fellow hamber ange33, we decided that stretching the chasis out would do two things 1. would definitely give it a more comfertable and smooth ride 2. by stretching it it adds a nice look to the car overall. being that the chasis was so long we had to leave enough space between everything without leaving huge gaps. I also think that it lets your eye move evenly over the whole car, rather than just concentrating on a couple key things and missing others, hope that makes sense to you, it does to me. Thanks for all the nice comments guys, as always it is greatly appreciated. Steve.
Also butch27, i found them at macs after i had already chopped this one. Here are the part numbers FRONT CUSHION $70.00 item# TSRT13 length 36 1/2' width 18' FRONT BACKREST $47.00 item# TSRT14 length 38' x width 12 1/2' Hope that helps out a bit more, Steve.
Moondog62, the rear end is an 8.8 came out of a 1988 ford mustang gt, i didnt have to machine the axle shafts i was lucky enough that wheel vintiques made a chrome smoothie for a 4 bolt ford pattern, thanks for the kind words.
Hey guys got a few more pics of some of the stuff that I have been doing, as always questions and comments are always welcome. Btw, those valve covers are not staying on the car, I have the finned ones that I will be putting on.
Thanks for the nice comment, was able to get into a tool and die shop and was given free rein to use whatever i wanted, so it was pretty cool to be able to use my imagination, and who can argue with free material and use of equipment.
The "don't run a SBC" remark always comes up & it reminds me of people that say"don't run a SBC, everyones got one"( or 39 taillites) Thats like The "YOGISM" of "no one goes to that resturant anymore, its too crowded"!!lol Also i have a T & i can't imagine how you would get a clutch pedal inside one of them to run a 4 speed. If ya want get a auto & put a "manual shift" kit in it. I really dig that gauge panel! It's over kill, haha. Lots of panels like that in the little books. You need a better camera! Norton
