So today i moved my truck out for more room, blew the body apart and set the frame up on my "table" to get started.
All trued, level and locked down tight.
Started fitting the boxing plates once all that crap was done..pretty typical stuff so not very interesting.

I did get a much better profile pic though before i took it all apart. I like it with the hood a LOT more once i could step back and get a better view.

    THANKS Andy!

So, after fiddling around with the rear plates, i decided to actually start in front and work back.
Aside from the Z, my frame is bone stock with original crossmembers and K member in tact. Keeping the K member was a debate in my head for a while.
I REALLY didn't want to take it out, so, i'm not.
I know i'll have to trim it here and there, but i'll build off of it instead of losing it all together.
The front og crossmember was messed up pretty good, and i have an A cross member for it anyway (thanks JJ!) so out it went and in with the "new" one.
Then i welded the K member to the frame because i'm strange like that. Left the rivets in place, just locked it in place for good..
Then started trimming and fitting up the front boxing plates.
They will tie into the K member as you can see.

I have 1x2 rec tubing for behind the K that i'll be using..along with boxing plates as usual. I've got it all sketched but wont be starting that til the front section is all tacked in place.

Guess that's it for now....back to your regular scheduled program.

  5. 3.5" is a great chop! You'll also have no problems stuffing that 6-71 under that hood;)

Can't believe i missed this for so long. It's a great looking car, especially digging the wheels!

Thanks! and thanks for the clearance info too. My last 32 had a blown sbc too, and although i didn't run a hood, i knew it was REAL close...
I didn't set up that frame though so this one will be built around the blower clearance. at least thats my plan.

  7. DAM! Dude you need to do the tect on doing those lovers and building the dies. That is so old school I about dumped my drink on the keyboard.

  8. I set mine up and run approx 1/8" clearance between the nut on the front carb air cleaner and the centre hood support. Depending on what sump you run you may get more clearance, ive got a milodon deep stroker sump, so naturally everything is a tight squeeze.

PM me if you need a measurement.

Thanks for the offer, i'll let you know if i do. I'm running a stock pan so thats a plus. On my old car i was about an inch away from being in the clear at the front air cleaner.
After reading what pan you have i'm feeling real good about it working out and looking forward to getting it mocked up.

I'll keep ya'll posted. So far i've got the chassis well on it's way. Should have a progress update this weekend.

    thanks again.

Oh man far from it! but thanks! :D

The frame work behind the K is all tacked in. Still have another crossmember i want to add at the top of the Z and some gussets here and there.
    I used 1x2 11ga tubing so it's plenty strong...
Tomorrow i'll finish up the fab work and start welding it solid.
not much else to add i guess....for now anyway.

The profile looks perfect with a full hood. Nice!

I have a 4-71 with a stock firewall. Super tight, but the hood fits.

    Thanks Phil!
Well, been a little bit since i've updated anything, and since i've really done much to it due to health issues with my dad. It's a scary story that i'm not interested in writing about, i'm just THANKFUL to still have him!!!!

    On to the shit box.
The boxing and X member are done. It's not off my makeshift table/jig and ready to start the suspension once i get right height established.

Here's a few pics from this morning.

Tony, the build looks great. I have a 32 Pontiac 5 window project. I notice you have the stock hood and sides. Would you mind sharing the measurements of the hood top with me? I bought one off of ebay but when I received it the bead on the hood doesn't match my body bead on the front quarter. Going to have rootlieb make me one. Thanks for the frame pics also. Mine is just a plain frame with no x frame or front crossmember. Your phone pics are good enough for me to replicate. Keep up the good work.

    Thanks a lot.
What measurements are you actually looking for? General length and width?
I can't get them today, but will tomorrow when i go to work on the car.

Oh my Gosh Tony, that's really turning out incredible! Very fast turn around on this build I hope you keep up the pace.....however I know you're just a man so I will understand if there is a Lull. :D

The frame looks awesome but that body still has me drooling. The chop is perfection.

    Thanks guy's.
I had to take off all last week on this due to health issues with my dad, so i'm taking my time :D...but i can't help it when i do go to work on it i'm on it heavy! i'm having a blast building this thing! haha

I'm stoked to start on the suspension this week.
Shouldn't take too long really, but i do need to get some seamless tubing yet, and some misc bits and pieces in order to actually bolt anything together.
Going to be borrowing some wheels and tires from a buddy so i can set right height etc because i havn't picked what i'm running on my rims yet.

Hopefully i'll have something done by the end of the week..Going to start on the front first.

    Thanks again guys.

I love the stacked rear frame rails...just like some old time builds I have seen.

The rear legs of center X looks rock solid too.

Yeah, the Z was started on this a LONG time ago, just never finished. I had to leave it and finish it. It was originally stick welded.

Mat, thanks! i'll let ya know. I'm gonna be needing about 20ft total, but i have to go back and check what size i need. I have it written down where the car is.

Geoff, thanks man! my dad's doing MUCH better. Long story short, he wasn't feeling well and called me at 1am tuesday to take him to the hospital. He had a heart attack about 10 minutesafter we got there and they took good care of him right away. He's now home and recovering..someone was watching over him, and us and we are all very thankful!!!!
Thankfully, the car is at his place so i'm there all the time anyway which is nice.
And thanks for the pic! I still love that damn car!:D:D

Andy, thanks! i only wish there was more old chrome on it! haha But there's enough for this thing.

    Back at it tomorrow.

    Thanks a lot fella's.

  29. I just came across and read through this entire thread.
    WOW !!!
Really nice work you are doing there.
You are moving at breakneck speed, just like I suspect the car will.
Love the finger slicer deck lid.
I think Jeffrey James summed up the chop best saying it looks sinister!
I have a 32 5W on my "I never should have sold that" list.

I will keep watching this build.
    Great work man.
