Just did a tech for tech week on the gauge cluster build. Check it out. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=7517066#post7517066
Worked on the rear section getting ready to set the bed on and get the exhaust done. Yes that is a trailer hitch. Going to put this bitch to work. I have a tear drop I occasionally pull.
I have been busy working for our statewide automotive lobbying organization. I put out a schedule for all the events in Idaho and spend time in a booth at a couple car shows each spring. With that out of my way it's time to get back on this project. Today I fab-ed up a trany torque converter cover. Because of the 1 1/2" think adapter for the 700r4, I used a portion of the Buick cover and a portion of a metal 700r4 cover. Spent most of the day on it and all I have to do now is finish welding it and clean it up for paint.
Thanks! A little here and there. Been busy getting the home front ready for summer. Time to start playing again.
I know how that goes we are getting ready to sell our house so ive been working nonstop fixing the dumb stuff that has stacked up in the last 3 years. im getting ready to see this truck outside of the garage with the body all on
I have had the time and energy to start working on the interior panels the last couple of days. I had built the wood storage box for behind the seat but hadn't secured it until now. Cut and fit the panels out of ABS to be covered today. Now I need to get serious and figure out a pattern for the seats and panels. All white with yellow beading, white with yellow tuck-n-roll? Not sure were I'm going with it yet. I know how it would have been done in the 60's and if I keep to my period theme I know what I need to do. Any thoughts?
Very nice Mj40s. I like your behind-the-seat storage box. There's always something useful to stow there... tools, jack, jacket, etc. Here's mine in my '50 F1:
Hey mj40, Do you have some more pictures of the trailer hitch? I'm just building one for my 40 and wanted to see how and where you attached yours. Thanks Flattyv8
Good! Now I can sleep a little better knowing that I've given a little something back for the ton of ideas I've hauled in from this build of yours.
The hitch was built for my coupe but before I got it installed I needed it for my black 40 pickup. Seeings how I'm going to sell it soon, I stole it to put on my project pickup. One of the reasons I use the stock rear crossmember is the great place to mount the forward plate for a trailer hitch. I had to space it to clear the deeper poly gas tank. I bolt a length of angle iron to the rear most frame crossmember to weld the hitch to. Makes for a good stable hitch to tow almost anything.
Tuck and Roll is the plan. In the mid 60's on senior day instead of listening to those boring seminars on job choices, I stayed home and did a T&R job on my dads pickup in black vinyl. That led me into another 40 years of being an upholster. I was mostly a furniture guy but dabbled in auto for friends and all my own.
I've been enjoying watching the build progress. I need to find a local supplier of the ABS sheets to make some kick panels for my '40 truck, so I can stick some speakers in them.
Thanks...just hung up with Regal Plastic, here in Springtown, and they sell it for $54 for a 4x8' sheet of 1/8 inch. Looks like I am going to have project in the near future!
Wow, I thought I had an original idea! I also used the 3rd seat out of a 'burban, a 2006 I think. I took the bottom apart and pinched the frame so that the seat sides were parallel to the doors. The later model 3rd seats have the built in shoulder belts. I made special hinge type mounts for the seat so that I can either flip the seat back forward or lift the seat base up to access the space under the seat riser The hinge mounts bolt right through the S-10 cab mounts that I used so my seat frame (and therefore the mounting of the seat and shoulder belts) goes right through the frame of the truck. AND I also used the overhead console from a Blazer/Jimmy I'm utilizing the map lights as dome lights/map lights and I made a new panel to mount my power window switches and installed that where the rear seat climate controls were in the front of the console.
OK,I have to subscribe after reading this build all morning My 51-F-1 has sat for way too long while I've been remodeling the house...
I did much the same with the S-10 seat to fit between the doors. I wanted it to look somewhat stock or period but my wife did request seat belts. The hinge idea sounds good. Any photos of that one? If your referance is to the box behind the seat. Just made a pattern that would allow the seat to go back as far as it could. These things are tight for leg room if you are over 5'10" or 231 lbs. Then I built it out of wood. Welcome aboard. Hope you didn't get too board! I had planned on this thing being done by now but my energy is back up now so hope to be driving this pig in a couple weeks.
You don't want to buy from where I did. If I mention his name out of Colorado this thread will be closed. It was junk and every piece either had to be altered to fit or replaced. Looks good now. If I had to do it again I would have bought the pieces from Mack Hills. I got the corner pockets and tailgate from them anyway. Good stuff. I had to alter the side panels and top rails to fit the original style corner pockets that were correct from MK. The front panel was square at the top and I cut that off and welded pipe to it so it would look correct. Then I rolled some lines in it to give it strength and look stock.
Thanks mj40, That is the exact way I've started building mine. The truck is looking great. Thanks, flattyv8
I got my repop box from Northern Classic Trucks in Michigan. It's a dead ringer for the stock box and it went together nicely. www.northernclassictrucks.com
