Hi All Thanks for having me in the group. I've been a member of The Garage Journal for a while and now that I've finished my garage, I bought a car to fill it. Been tinkering with cars and trucks for many years and was a general mechanic in my 20's and 30's (about a hundred years ago). I was hoping someone can help me with my 50 Styleline. I just replaced my trans (3sp 318) and it works great except for it won't downshift out of 3rd. If I'm going really slow and throttle it carefully it will release with some resistance. Upshifts beautifully. Any ideas?
Hi. I had similar problems with the 3 on tree with my 46 Chevy Coupe. I could down shift as long as car was moving but if I left it in high and came to a stop it would not come out and had to take off in high & get moving to downshift.. That was a big problem if I parked where I had to back up. The rubber bushings around the shift rods where they went thru the upper shift arms coming out of steering column under the hood were worn out. Replacing them and adjusting the rods to where the two upper arms were parallel in neutral fixed the problem. You can get the rubber bushings from www.chevsofthe40s.com . Later I found the front shaft bearing in housing was also worn out and shaft could wobble and that amplified the shift problem with the bushings. Good luck, Jimmie
Hi Jimmie, just seeing your reply now. I packed the car up in storage since my post. Thinking of bring it back out this year and will definitely look into the areas you suggested. Thanks so much for making these suggestions!
