I have a 51 Mercury that I have decided to make into what I have always wanted. The car is all original now, Flathead V8, 3 on the tree. The car has no rust. I bought the car after a 3 year search from a fellow that had the car for 13 years. He only drove it 78 miles - in 13 years. It is a 6V Pos ground car so it has some issues. I have driven the car on weekends since I have owned it with few issues. I have owned the car for 7 years. I have decided to chop it, change out the drive train and paint it the way I want. I have a fellow to chop the top, but I am starting with the drive train. I would like to go with a small block ford, automatic, new diff. My thoughts were a 302 or similar but am not sure about what differential will match up best. Would like to hear the options on this from some of you with more experience than me. Am open to all suggestions. Thanks
Welcome! Tons of Merc folks on here with all sorts of different set ups. Mine has an early 70's Nova front clip with power disc brakes, power steering, small block chevy and over drive trans with a 10 bolt camaro rear end. Just drove it to Texas and back and got 22 mpg...better than my "real" car (which is being replaced by the merc. ). Great looking car and looking forward to following your progress.

NOTHING cooler than a Flathead-powered Mercury ! All the car in my opinion needs is some whitewalls on stock steelies and lowering.Nothing more.Done.Feel the POWER of a 1951 Mercury.Don't ruin the car by pulling out the Heart & Soul of Hot Rodding.Welcome to the HAMB !
