While waiting the notching pieces,i test fitted & sitted the front seat,it felt really great. So not anykind of regrets for buying the seats. I have to figure out how to mount it,that benchseat is from 49-50' and 51's have different tracks..
You're a few steps ahead of me! I also need to make a frame so as to mount the bench seat. So I'll be watching you closely. Looking good!
I weld wide plates on the inside of the track holder you need to do the oposites I lowered my seat on same time when i cut the old bottom plates
Nope, believe me you are a LOT ahead of me,both rear quarter panels need work too, trunk floor, notching etc.I've got some done, but i've found a lot more things to do.Just messing with the seat because there's a break with the notching. I've thinking something like that too,the sitting height felt pretty good for the guy whit my own height. So there wont be a need for lowering.Well, maybe an inch, but not more than that. The 51' floor panels are bit curvy, just where the front seats rear mounting bolts are supposed to be.I guess i'll try to copy the original tracks design, when i see one in somewhere.
Back in business...sort of. I made a cardboard template for the notching pieces, kind of amateur stuff again.I took it to my friends shop and he draw an autocad version of my so called template. And awhile waiting to get them from lasercutter,i did some wheel update for my bike.Yes,yes,i know this is a car forum, but i guess one bike pic doesnt hurt nobody and there is my friends 58' Edsel on the background,so its not completely off-topic pic At today my friend called and told me that he got the pieces from lasercutter,so i picked them up from his shop: Those holes are not for speed purposes, they are for attaching purposes...
That notch looks awesome. I like the idea of the holes for welding also. Really like the bike also. Thanks for the update.
Thanks Stefan! Wow,its been really long time since i last updated this thread.Well,i guess its something to do with the light,we have only few hrs daylight per day at wintertime. So whatta hell you can do,than build your ride? And now we have daylight almost 24 hrs per day,so there is a lot more to do than this... So,i welded the notching pieces together: And made a mockup,i noticed that i have to seal the shock mounting holes, they are peeping behind the notching pieces and would ruin my tig welding.I have to relocate the shock mounting, but that is not todays headache. I have one week work before my 4 week summervacation,my plan is to turn on the FTW(F*ck The Work)mode on and mess with my shoebox most of that time.Just cant wait
Those notches look good. I presume you will box them once you've cut out the original bits below it. Now get to work while it's still daylight. hahahaha
Haha! Yeah,i did some bending job at last thurday.I dont own a blowtorch,so my boss gave me permission to do some bendjob after working hrs.So the bottom parts are ready and waiting for welding too.It wasnt actually a bad job,but i had to make a jig for them. So,it took more time to make that jig, than the actual heat treatment.
Everything is tackwelded and looks like to be straight too.I add some 2x2 between the notches.I had to weld the rear tubing a bit forward,to get some clearance for the gas tanks subframe. It would be impossible to lift the body off the frame with out doing that. I also weld threated bungs inside the notch pieces, you can see the holes on the top of the notch pieces. So there will be some extra body to frame mounting bolts. Its really hard to get good welding position with tig when the body is on the frame. So,i guess this will be the first and last time when i notch anything with this method.I hope i'll get it done soon..
So,i got the notch job done so far.I had to hack some fenderwells to get access for welding the bottom pieces.Really hated to do that, but i had no choice.Like i said its the first and last time when i notch anything with this method,i dont recommend it for anyone.I guess you got best results with taking the body off the frame, sandblast the frame and after that start notching the damn thing. I think i'll start to fab the rest of the subframe for the trunk floor next...
Thanks guys! This week is a kind of busy one,but i'll try to mess with the shoebox aswell. Me and my friends are organizing a small hot rod/kustom/bike related show and i have to give some time and attention for the event too.. I helped one friend of mine to buy a 41' Plymouth coupe via hamb.I think it was worth to buy,we dont have much early 40's mopar coupes around in here. It arrived right on time and we decided to use it as a sign for the show at next saturday. So,my friend have to keep his fingers out of the "sign",i am sure he want to start messing with it asap I borrowed this pic from the clubs blog:
We had a great show,i am glad that everything went fine. There's only 2 shoeboxes in my hometown, mine and and this one: More pics from the show: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=610601 I'll try to post some update pics soon...
Okey, here is my poor effort to create some yard art: Well, not really.I laid some primer for the trunk subframe parts. Looks like i am going to have some space in the trunk after all.I thought that the notching could waste more trunk space than it did. I guess there will be some trunk panel fabricating next.I can do most of them, but i need some new toys,so i bought a shrinker/stretcher from ebay..
That is a beefy sub-frame. You've got more steel in your trunk than I've got left in my whole car Looking forward to seeing how you handle your trunk floors, although you already have more original steel left than I do...
Thanks! Yeah,i have original steel left, but both corner panels beside the fenderwells are rotten, tail pan is also in bad condition.I just havent cut them off yet My plan is to make the floor section for notching first, then fenderwells.I dont want to cut everything off the trunk yet because those rotten POS pieces will keep the body straight.I can fab some of the floor, but there will be a point when i need the shrinker/stretcher.I have to fab a stand and make it as foot operated as a sideproject. Thanks man! Few yrs ago, when i was building my shovelhead,i use to buy all the expensive parts from Krooners bike shop in Lebanon Tennessee. They had fair prices and fine service, too bad they are out of business.I dont know is it familiar for you,but they had somekind of sushi restaurant in that shop too. If i remember right, their speciality was a sushidog.I really dont want to know where did they got that idea to crossbreed hot dogs and sushi
I think I'm at the stage where I can drop mine back on the frame and get back to the floors. I've been waffling about buying a shrinker/stretcher too. I've patched and cobbled together my fenderwells, but I'm still not happy. Once I get the floor in I might cut the fenderwells out to make something from scratch.
You just used up about three hours ...........F'ing GREAT ! ! ! ! I'm putting a Jag rear end in mine, not as much floor pan work, but you got me thinking....
I have bought tools when there is a need for them, well most of them.I am glad that i have an access for the sheetmetal brake, lathe and other huge tools. So i dont have to buy them all, those bastards waste a lot of space in the garage. I dont have a plan for the fenderwells yet,but i guess i'll figure out something. Thanks! I've never heard that anyone has put a jaguar rear end in the shoebox. The width is near the same than its on original axles?
