Nice car. That Merc dash pod is Aluminum. and will polisl out like chrome. You shoud see one engine turned !! I will be yelled at, but that green paint belongs on a garden shed. Not on a custom car.All that work to make it look good, then put that horrid green on that car is criminal. An Eggplant paint with a creme or white intreior woud be a hughe improvment. It's your choice, but WHY rob yourself of a great look .Green makes it just another old car in my opinion, I love your car, but paint.........
I Love the car and the steering wheel, the 2 door conversion is my favorite part of the build. You did a great job.
GREAT BUILD ! YOU CAN USE MIODERN BODY PANEL GULE TO GLUE THE HEADLIGHT RIMS SOLID TO TOUR FRNDERS TO FRENCH THEM,SUPER EASY. iT SOUNDS SILLY, BUT THAT GLUE HOLDS THE D00R HINGES ON FULL SIZED PICK UPS.lOOK AT ONE. iT WORKS. THOSE HEADLIGHT DOORS ARE ALUMINUM CAST AND CAN NOT BE WELDED.tHE GLUE IS VERY SERIOUS STUFF.IT works! GLUE, Finish wih bondo ,sand and your done. 'don't use excess of bondo 'Headlight do not requie anything. That crrome ring WILL pop out with a hacksaw blade, check alignenent, change headlights just like stock.JUST POP TRIM RING back. Yes I have used this method, I hve a '53 Candian Meter. Same car as American model, just different badges. Check The rear wheel clearence ,-tire to inner fender. I think the driver side is an inch closer to fender. If you are switching wheels, offset is important. Good Luck with your car,
search out daddy o diner with the awesome 54 ford and ask him about doing what you are advising. Then ask him what I told him would happen if he did it. Than ask what happened, yeah I told him so. The glue expands at a different rate than the metal and you will get a "bond line" or a ghost around the seam. It is what happend when brazing was done.
Yup, ghost line at the seam. Loveoftiki knows his stuff. I found out after he is a Rep for Dupont. He walked right up to my car at the Sins of Steel show, pointed at the ring and said told you so. I still won best custom at the show. So, its not very noticeable
That would look cool! I am thinkin i have changed my mind on the paint. The brand i am using for the green is WANDA. Good brand. Not cheaply made either. Good cost. And good luck!
I still won't french them in. Even if it works! I learned about the panel bonding stuff in school. Luckily by screwing up so I wont in the future! Thanks for all of the kind words guys. I really appreciate it.
First off. I love opinions. Really i do. But what have you built? Hope that doesn't sound to rude, but post up. This has already happened once in this thread. Now 2 times? Hope not. Have you built a garden shed at least? And why the f@ck would i want to polish my guage pod and not the rest of the dash? The whole dash is not aluminum you know that? And even if that were the case, how would the polished dash look next to the unpolished garnish mouldings? Would look real good right? That would be even dumber than the green? You think?
Oh MY! What big balls you have. I love your go-for-it approach, many extremly cool original ideas, you didn't relly worry about what the other sheep were doing. Tip-o-my-hat to you brother, outstanding. ~Sololobo~
For what it's worth---I often am redoing the other bro's ride to my tastein my mind, different wheels, color choice and many other redo's, but its much cooler to tell the guy he has an ass kickin car and remember it's his vision and his car. Evreybody's happy and no one is second guessing themselves. Peace and love in the hot rod sport is abundant, and this site is loaded with it, pass it on ~Sololobo~
I do too. But only voicing it if that person asks for opinions. I did. But when you yourself have not built something? OR at least, it appears that way? Really? But I have seen A LOT of stuff on this site. And mostly not of the peace and love type. Seems like most every topic i have read lately has some guy that knows better's opinion in it. Not all ofthem mind you. But most.
I'm concerned about the way you mounted the upper "V" for the rear suspension. Have you tried to articulate the rear suspension and watch what happened to the upper arms and mount?
I have. And i need a panhard bar. It does fine till it is in hard corners or high speed corners. Like a parking lot, or of course, on the highway. I am building a panhard bar for it soon. I just have not had the time. with it articulated, it does flex a bit. I have been driving it now since april. I have been to quite a few shows around here and far from here. So far everything else is OK. I appreciate your concern. Seriously. Does that answer your question?
Yeah,, just please keep an eye on that area, it really needs something to allow for the upper bushing to twist. Not sure if it will twist enough to fatigue the welds and such but better to be safe than sorry.
I just found this thread and I really like the work you've done so far. Pretty creative to turn a mordor into a tudor. The rear quarter work is pretty cool too. It lends itself to the flow of the car pretty well. Probably had a few of the old timers scratching their heads and saying.."Now what the hell is different here?" lol I also like the fact you used a Y-block instead of an sbc. I had one in my '56 F-100 for a while and the Y block has to be one of the best sounding engines with headers and glass packs. Sounded better than the 429! Keep us posted. I can see this car will be a show winner.
I think the green is gonna look killer! I fell in love with this one at ink n iron. Can't wait to see yours all finished up
that's why i am thinking of changiny my mind on the paint idea ( not the color ) is cuz of this car! I do not want one that comes close to anyone elses. At first glance that is. But yeah, the green will stay just done differently i think.
the bushing has a lot of give actually. Sorry. Misunderstood you. I kept a close eye on it for a bit and still check it periodically.
Choptvan, I agree with you 100%........If you get a chance, read Alberta Bud's biography. I think he's just happy to be here. Believe me, I'm not bustin' your balls because I build 'em like I want them also and screw everyone's opinion but take 3 minutes to read his biography and you'll have a better understanding about him. I changed my opinion after reading it........Again, great workmanship.
awright, I'm gonna do this the way you want--- I think the "nose" on your decklid looks more like a "load" in the pants. (or a pre-op with a bad "tuck job") now, since you seem to require credentials, here's a link to one of my projects http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=346803 fair enough? edit--- the rest of the car is WAY cool, and looks like good craftsmanship, keep up the good work, just keep "flow" in mind
well shit cory. You come across as a real asshole for a guy building a rusty ass set of frame rails and not much to show for. If you saw me you would know who i am. I have seen your credantials. I have seen what you have driven around in the past. Seen your work at A-1 streetrods. No bone to pick with you. In a lot of ways your work goes past mine. And again, my car. I wanted it to be different. Not like every other fukn 54 ford out there. Which is why i am not doing some things but doing others. Like not putting in the olds tail lights. And not frenching the headlights. Not putting in a 5.0 or a SBC. I want it to be mine. Something that stands out. Like my 53 plymouth. Or even the other work i have done. Mine. Hope that makes better sense now.
I know who you are. I figured you knew who I was. Your work has come a long ways from the van or that rat sedan. I'm impressed, and relieved. I dig what you're doing with this car, for the most part, and respect that it's YOUR CAR to be done YOUR way. I came across like an ass on purpose, mostly to ruffle your feathers. (obviously it worked, as you felt the need to slam back at me!!!) If you post up here, especially if you solicit others' opinions, expect that they will differ from your own. No need to puff your chest and call out each who offers an opinion. Many of the posters on this board have years more experience than either of us, but they don't feel the need to qualify every comment they offer. You don't hear a PHD in physics preface every comment or opinion with "I'm a PHD in physics, so I know what the hell I'm, talking about, wanna see my degrees?" or a boxing title holder say "I'm the heavyweight champion of the world, I can beat the SHIT out of you, so you BETTER listen" Or me, I don't start every comment with " I've been building hot rods for twenty years plus, worked at a full time street rod shop for ten, and done this, and done that and....." see what I mean?
Yes it ruffled a bit. I am glad actually. I see what you are saying. I see your points and take them to heart. And yes ANYTHING i build now is much better.
