So... toddling on the final door glass,... the last week has been,.... frustrating to say the least.
I was really stuck getting the window regulators into the window channels. The glass was in and slid well in the glass runs.. but.....I was stuck getting the rollers in the regulators to snap into the channels.
    I was getting pissed.

I called up my pal Rob(who did all the metal work on the car)(( a very Talented guy)) and he dropped by last night to see the car and.... within 5 minutes had both windows operating.
He just had a different take on how to proceed.
    He laughed, I cried.

    What a great guy...
Rob is creating the rear back tray for a Business Man sedan for me.... took a few more additional measurements.. and now that's underway.

    Getting closer.

    Jeff,

Thanx for taking us along for this ride.

I (and most others on here I'm sure) really want to see this car in person somewhere someday.

Yep, what Mike said... Waiting to see it and go for a ride. :D And, gotta love it when someone else can step in and make something look easy that we have been fighting. Glad to know I am not the only one with that issue apparently.

Window regulators, one side takes 3 hours and the other side takes 10 minutes. One of those things where once you know the order of operations it's all simple, but figuring it out from scratch is the worst.

Both cars are going to be great. Were you planning on doing both of them at the same time or did it just happen that way? I'm busy enough trying to carve out time to build one! If only I didn't have to run a company and spend time with my family... :p

That thing is beautiful! You're making me jealous...

In 1971 I was running a black '57 Custom two-door at SIR with a 390, 4-speed and glass nose. Spent more money than I could afford, broke a lot of parts but had a great time!

We had my doors completely apart. I had some great help too. $800 later, including 2 donor doors, both worked great.

Is this originally a "business coupe" with a package tray or are you just making it that way? The reason I ask is my '58 is a model 70D business coupe but the package tray was long gone when I got it. Torn between going with a back seat or building a package tray like you..

No.. My 57(the black one) was a custom 300..... I have turned into a 70D,... My BLACK/WHITE car is an original Custom 300 and it will remain that way.
Original 70D cars are very hard to find and are big $$$.... From what I understand, They only made about 6500 of them in 57 and even less in 58.
If you have the 58 70D..... I would definitely have a tray instead of a back seat.
Yes.. the trays were all tossed many years ago.. because they were thought of not any importance.
Today, an original tray goes for about $3500-$5000...... if you can even find one.

My pal Rob is such a talented metal guy..... I am always in awe of his skills.
He is making my tray from drawings and a loaned tray.

The pics are just samples he was playing with on scrap in his shop......

I wouldn't hesitate to put a tray in your 58.... very rare car.
Saying all that.... my car is Hot rodded and I have no interest in stock restorations.... too much money and no fun(that's me)

Rob may make 2-3 extra trays and see if anyone out there has any interest.....

Back on the Car,... the goal line is within site and today is some stainless repair and headliner install day....
    Getting super close.

What was the last year for the business coupe? I know they were offered in '59.

1959 was the last year.... very very small production numbers.

I have seen a production number of about 4060 business coupes (model 70D) made in 1958. I don't know how accurate that is.
The pic of the package tray I found in another post.. I know a pretty good metal guy too so I think I will talk with him about it. He had a build thread on here years ago on his 35 3w coupe.

Well. Hopefully my interior guy is coming Sunday to install the Wind Lace and Headliners for both cars on the weekend(hopefully)
So... been doing the small jobs that are nagging.....
Painted all the interior trim for the black car..... using OG interior trim on the B/W car....
I used a low Lustre Ford Paint for the interior ... They came out ok.

So..I have to repair the windshield and rear window stainless..... I have a ton of it. but 50% is heavily damaged or dented bad..... I did managed to get 2 full sets out of my stock pile...BUT.....The brainiacs that took these off of other 57's.. tore, or completely damaged the small mounting tabs on each end of stainless.
    So.. I have been repairing....
The "J" corner stainless pieces ALL have rotten or torn interior tabs.... this pieces were made of reg. spring steel and simply rotted away over time.
I had to carefully disassemble.... make "J" tabs, bond them.... then insert them into the stainless J Corners.... again... I had about 16 pairs and Only one was ok to use....
    this job is incredibly tedious.........

Nearly complete now.. but I have to carefully re-crimp.. what a PIA.

And Onto the front n rear glass......
this makes me EXTREMELY nervous... front glass now is about $500-700 and the rear is a little less.... so getting Fairlane glass is a bit easier than Custom Glass..... Of course. I got 2 custom based cars....
So.... I have had my glass stored safely away for a while.. and to do these cars. all the stainless must be attached to the rubber on the glass... so. hence.. the above posts.... and the glass CANNOT go in until the Headliner is installed.
I will not attempt the installation of the headliner.... I have a hard time putting a T shirt , let alone a massive headliner.(I have all the correct bows and they are numbered BTW)
So.. as mentioned... I have my stainless and I am still repairing. but I have attached the rubber and tested the stainless..... so far so good.

Oh yea. I had to gather all those terrible Wind lace fasteners ,clean and paint....

I know NONE of this is cool Hotrod Stuff...... but is really really important to get the glass and stuff ready.....

And ....Of course.... my Heater core took a dive..... great..... just great..... leaking on the red circled area.
Its not a big issue. just another roadblock.... and with the rise of material and labor costs these day...
The cost of a rad shop has almost tripled in the last 3 years....... FML. IMG_5498.jpeg
