Ok, after a LONG pause, I am back at it! Have a new 302 in the works at my brothers shop. The aod is on the shelf getting ready to install a 2200 stall, a shift kit, and basic freshening. I wil try to get some pics up soon. Anybody here that has done this swap, what radiator hoses are u using. The 302 sits on 84 stang mounts and the radiator is a y block replacement with p*** side upper hose and driver side lower. Oh, I changed the timing cover and water pump to 72 f150 pieces.

Engine compartment is spray bombed, new 302 is done, as soon as the flywheel and clutch kit come in I am putting it all together! The aod is gone, going back with the 3 on the tree:) not much progress...especially since its been dead over a year, but it's better than nothing I guess.

Ok, new 302 is in...kept the 3 on the tree:) I learned today that just because alt brackets are off a 302, that doesn't mean that everything will live up right. It's coming along now. When it's done I will do a parts list for anybody interested. It ****s that it gets dark an hour and a half after I get home now, so progress is limited, but steady so far. Hey man, progress is progress. Its amazing how a couple of hours here and there can add up rather than waiting for a long weekend etc. Btw, the 302 looks good in there.

So far I am getting more done in an hour and a half each night than I was on three hours each night! I guess it's a matter of knowing I don't have much time so I spend less time playing and more time working:)

Small update if anyone cares...IT RUNS! Waiting on the Z bar pivot ball to hook up the clutch then take it in for exhaust. ImageUploadedByTJJ1359975278.069725.jpg
If anybody wants, I will do a parts list for this swap.

Gettin closer! I ordered a z bar block side mount that screws into the block (the new motor is a 72 302) I figured I would just slide the frame side mount back to line everything up...didn't work. So I made a bracket that bolts to the bellhousing and puts the ball where it needs to be, which is 1 1/2" farther forward and 1" closer to the engine.

Not bad for only using a drill, 4" grinder, hammer and a bench vise I guess.
Everything lines up good now. Will do wiring, new u joints, and small odds and ends tomorrow, and hopefully have it driving this weekend. When it's done I will do a parts list if anyone cares.

Quick question tho. I bought a coolant overflow thank, cheap black plastic from summit. Does it have to be mounted at a certain height in relation to the radiator?

As long as its lower than your radiator cap you're good to go.

It's about 3" lower than the cap. I was worried it maybe to low to siphon back as it cools down. Thanks!

    Ok, parts list:
---Fox body mustang motor mounts fit perfect, and kept trans in stock location (word of warning tho...the mounts will fit either side, one way will move the engine about 1 1/2" forward compared to the other way)

---I used front timing cover, fan and all brackets from a 71-72 f100

---78 f150 exhaust manifold on driver side to clear Z bar

---84 mustang exhaust manifold on p***. Side simply cause that's what I had

---home made z bar engine side mount. To use all stock z bar and frame mount with out modifying it, I moved the engine side mount 1 1/2" forward and 1" closer to engine.

    ---stock y block radiator

    ---upper rad hose for a 78 f150 with 302

---lower rad hose I have no clue other than it is 2 hoses spliced with a piece of exhaust tubing to fit right:)

---throttle linkage from pedal out firewall is stock, but the linkage that mounts to the carb is a 78 f150 with a 302 that was shortened 1/2". Also to get the linkage to clear the breather I had to run a 1" spacer under the carb.

---alternator, volt reg and wiring from 77 f150 parts truck adapter to stock harness

    ---clutch is for a 71 f100 with 302/3 speed
    10 1/2" with 10 spline

--- I had to redrill and tap bellhousing from a 68 mustang to fit early 3 speed (had the bosses, just not the holes drilled)

---changed trans input bearing retainer on 1963 synchronized trans with one from a 75 ford truck 3 speed to fit bellhousing correctly

Dang, it didn't seem like that much work! I am sure I'm forgetting stuff, I will post it if I think of it, any questions just ask and I will post answers. Thanks for the interest and support everybody.

    Nicely done.

Question though, what happened to the original 302?

The original motor (223) I sold.
The first 302 I had was a 1 piece rear main, roller cam compatible block...my brother has a machine shop and builds/dynos all his motors...I basically traded him the better block for an already prepped shortblock he had on the shelf. Saved me time and money.

The 58 (other years too) the 3 speed manual trans was available with overdrive...is it possible to change the tailhousing (with the o.d. ***embly) onto a 63 up main case? That way I would have a synchronized trans with the overdrive and could keep my column shifter.

Put about 10 miles on it today...runs great! I have to get exhaust since right not it just has 12" down pipes from the manifolds. I need an adjustable clutch rod ( from the z bar to the clutch fork) otherwise everything works like a charm!

Well, after a month of driving it daily (60 miles round trip to work and back plus my running around) everything seems to be working out well. Even pushing 3000 rpm on the interstate for 18 miles one way, it pulls 16mpg. Definitely going to look for a manual trans with an overdrive! Putting ******* bars on it tomorrow to fix the severe wheel hop problem. Then it's just minor fixes till I drive it 400 miles to a carshow in tenn in April! Anybody here going to the BunnyRun in Jackson, tn?

Well, ******* bars helped a lot! Maybe too much, since I broke the transmission recently. It's apart again getting an AOD with a B&M torkmaster 2000 converter, a transgo shift kit, and a minor freshening. Always something I guess:) will do***ent the swap from 3 on the tree to AOD if anyone is interested.

Got the 3 speed out. Took off the top cover, and between first and reverse gears is a kind of spring loaded clip...I have no idea what it's called, but its broke. I was told it was what stopped it from going from 1st to reverse accidentally. The trans is from a 63 galaxie with a 390 if anybody can help with the part I need. Here's a few pics. Gonna fix the trans, but I am going ahead with the AOD swap. ImageUploadedByTJJ1366595218.563398.jpg

Check with Richmond Gear. I believe they have overhaul kits for that ******, and when it comes time to swap the aod in a rebuilt 3 speed ****** can help offset the cost. There's another outfit that does transmission parts too, can't remember 'em off the top of my head but I'll go thru my F100 receipts to see if I can find the name.

Got the AOD swapped in. Here's a bit of useful advice...when using the fox body mustang mounts, they are interchangeable from side to side and it moves the motor 1.5" forward or backwards...when I first mocked up the AOD while installing the 302, I had them on one way and everything fit great, no modifications at all! When actually swapping the AOD in permenantly, I had them on the other way. So the trans pan hit the crossmember, I swapped the mounts around and now it clears, but my exhaust hits, my throttle linkage doesn't fit, and I had to shorten my radiator hoses! Live and learn I guess:) gotta mount the trans cooler, swap to an automatic column I picked up and install the kickdown cable kit from Lokar, and I'm on my way!

Ok, I started a thread, but I'm going to post it here also....I am swapping my 58 ford from a 3 on the tree to an automatic. I bought what I was told was a 58-59 auto column. The problem I have is the stock 58 stick column tube is 1 1/2" od where it meets the steering box at. The auto column I bought is 1 1/2" until about an inch from the box where it expends to 1 5/8" od. So the collar that tightens at the end of the column won't fit. I can find or make a new collar, but will it be ok at the box, or will there be a problem as far as a leak, or water getting into it?[IMG][IMG]-LUKEY-

Alright, 5 months and 6000 miles later, the ol girl runs like a dream...been averaging 20 mpg out of it as a daily driver plus my weekend road trip car. You guys were right about keeping the 3.50 gears! I put the car in flat black primer, only until I can get the body work finished and paint it blue. I also added chrome reverse wheels to it. Been having a blast driving it, but I will be putting it away for winter in a few weeks. I have everything to rebuild my front suspension, and also everything to finish the interior. I will just add them to this post I guess. ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1384197660.770376.jpg ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1384197678.089184.jpg ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1384197701.138074.jpg
