heres a few more pics of the old cab and why i got the fresh one the whole truck was in this shape pretty much. as you can see the under side of the peak is totally fried and it extends all the way down the a pillars. and about a foot back on the top of the roof is crushable with a finger push shes a beaut...

hey guys im catchin HELL trying to get the rear spring out of the front hanger bracket. im assuming that pin just hammers out ?

 

After you remove the lock bolt.

 

I did two in last month, one truck was like that, we were replacing so we cut them out, seemed tapered or something would not clear. My 58 truck book showed it getting pulled with a slide hammer in the grease zert fitting threads???? Seemed like a fail, plus I didn't want to bend the bracket, NAPA has the new pins with lock bolts. Probably find they're pretty worn anyway.

yeah the retainer bolt was out. the one pin was still a pain to get out. the whole area was caked with rusty greasy dirt and crud. idk, anyways i eventually got the old springs out and threw the posies leaves in with the drop shackles i made. its lookin pretty low. it measures almost 9 inches total drop from where it was and the vehicle weight isnt even on it yet. were welding in the spring perches and shock mounts tomorrow its finally taking shape !!!!!!




heres a quick look with the 14's. ill be running 15's when its done. you can get an idea how much the truck has dropped.... the top of the framerail was above the top of the tire when i started

 

^^^ and i was surprised to find that all the shackle hardware etc is in great shape. ill be re using pretty much everything except the rubber and one retainer pin

 

C notch is lookin great! Looks like it will be the perfect stance with plenty of travel.I'm keeping an eye on this build! Good work!

 

Looks good, I knew I should have put the bars across mine when I did it and wished I had as soon as I finished, just for anything in the future.

Uhg!! our's wasn't this bad on the top but the underneath side was and I replaced it with another donor piece that was in better shape. it was a pain in the butt!!!

 

thanks guys, i really wanted to get a low stance and still have a great ride with zero clearance issue. this will be my daily when its done. we were originally just gonna run one tube on the notch and one rear crosmmember. we decided to beef it up a bit. and yeah chaddilac, after i thought about the other work the cab needs i really didnt wanna put the time or effort into that roof, looks like a total pain in the A$$.

so today we burned in the perches, upper and lower shock mounts. for the uppers we just cut the stock shock bracket end and made it work on the bridge tube. turned out decent. i think im just gonna run some monroes on there. heres a few pics. paint soon hopefully !!!

When I first started reading this thread, I wasn't sure where you were heading with the truck. Once you fired up the welder and started on the chassis, I was hooked. I love that era of Chevy/GMC trucks. I've got a '55 I'm building that's currently on hold until I can finish my '64 shop truck.

You're doing a great job, and I can't wait to see what you're going to do next!

 

thanks brotha, small updates. i went up to carlisle this past weekend. steve brought me the rear bed sill and a clean bench seat. so now those shitty dakota seats are gone. one booth had a big sale on parts so i got a transmission cover, and the passenger side floor pan patch i need. as for the next week or so we need to use our shop for my parents jeeps. both need some maintenance before the winter. then the truck will be back in the shop and i can really dig into this bitch. switch the cabs etc. ill probably be ordering the new shoes soon and hopefully get a mockup on the final ride height. chrome steelies with firestone bias cant wait

 

so i stripped the dash of the glovebox, ashtray, heater delete plate, and the speedo. i stripped the glove box door and ashtray down and threw a quick coat of primer on them. i will be switching the dash over to the new cab soon. gotta get a center patch panel for the boogered ass hole someone cut....




heres the crusty speedo next to the one i picked up at carlisle on the cheap. the one from carlisle had all the gauges gone through and everything freshened, and for the price i couldnt beat it.

 

i went ahead and cleaned up the old speedo. tore it apart and painted the tin plate, cleaned the lens and all the nasty old funk off of it. i took the bezel off the fresh speedo i have and ill be selling the old one. itll be in the classifieds if anyones interested.




in this pic the lens is soaking in turtle wax sticker and decal remover. got rid of the funk quick!!



and heres the final result. cleaned up damn nice. im just gonna pick up a new bezel for the fresh one im keeping since this one had a scratch or two anyways.

 

i also started smoothing out the bellhousing. i want to get rid of the cast markings, and that god forsaken color hopefully ill have it all sanded down and shot with a nice coat of gloss black by tomorrow. im gonna go through the m20 soon as well. also now that the perches are on the 9" housing, that will catch some gloss black this week as well.

Hopefully this works, im gonna try to post some picturez with the phone app. Got the rear end stripped, primed, and painted today. Made a ghetto paint stand with some jackstands and a pipe through the housing

Real slow updates. Stripped the cab down inside. Interior trim, door panels, some wiring, just doin small stuff. Im still waiting on my 2012 tax return, they said it will be in friday. So some new air tools and a miller 211 will be on the way. Im kinda stranded without tools right now. My sander, dremel, grinder, and floor jack all took a shit within a week. Anyways i managed to primer the door panels, and i got the rear end breather squared away. Also the d/s axle shaft went off to moser to be shortened.

in other news, i sent the axle shaft out to moser, they said they cant shorten it due to a taper in the shaft itself. does anyone else know who can shorten this ? i cant find a "cut to fit" shaft with the 5 on 5.5 pattern. any ideas ?

You have a great build thread Grenade! It gives me hope and inspiration. I have some of the same problems that you have ran into. One of these days I may get around to posting a thread too. Keep up the good work!

 

Very cool, but damn, I thought the truck looked good to begin with. Shows how easy it is to hide stuff with primer.....
