My heater box was pretty well rusted inside and out and I didn't have access to a sandblaster a few months ago when I restored it. In all, stripping it down to bare metal, straightening it, filling the areas that were pitted from rust, soldering the leaky core, and rebuilding the valve assembly including installing a new diaphragm, repainting and reassembling took me about 12 hrs. It turned out really nice, so it was worth it. I still need to disassemble, derust, and rebuild the blower assembly and then repair the deluxe linkage (I may just buy that part aftermarket, but it's pricey).

    Here's a few pics:

This is my first time welding by myself really. i just threw on the autoset to see how it did and went at it. Did a bunch of scrap sheetmetal stuff and i filled a few firewall holes after i felt semi comfortable with what i was doing. Im officially in love with this thing hahaha. I think manual settings work better than the autoset. Anyways i only got a few holes done on the firewall. Off to hang with the family. Happy holidays fellas ! I wanna hop back on this thing friday and really get it knocked out

Well my dad got stuck in traffic so the family plans got canceled tonight. I took another couple hours to work on the firewall. I didnt use a backing plate to do the holes n there were times when i coulda used one for sure. Mainly just the big holes left. They will be done this weekend

It's amazing how much a nice welder helps. I fought with my little box welder throughout the entire firewall process.

Some of the medium size holes i caught hell trying to build the weld up, i think a rod or plate backing the hole up woulda helped ten fold with that. But all in all this thing is very nice. The autoset actually works very well on sheetmetal. Thicker stuff is nicer to dial settings in manually. But im very pleased so far. it feels awesome to have a welder now, even tho i need way more practice. Its the thought that matters !! Haha

Finished with the firewall for the most part. I also made my first few passes on thicker metal. Turned out ok, i realized afterwards that i still had .24 wire in the machine so the puddle wasnt as big as i would have liked. All three welds passed the ghetto sledgehammer test hahaha

  13. Up the voltage and slow down. Looks like you are pulling. Try pushing the puddle.

Nice, I have not had a chance to weld any thick stuff for a while, but that looks good to me.

Just about the same wheel I am using, cool...

Thanks for the tips redhead. I was pushing on those and afterwards i noticed the HAZ was very small. I assume that was due to low voltage ? All in all i think there alright. Thats my first ever full pass on thicker metal.

Shadams i like that wheel man. Pretty similar. Your build is lookin awesome dude

did more practice on scrap i had laying around. right now im on 110 electric for everything, i need a new 220 outlet to fit the miller plug. i think the welds are looking better. i can throw more heat at em when i get 220. opinions/thoughts ?

im gonna fill up all the factory holes in the camaro clip tomorrow with more scrap i have and cap off the front and rear of the clip horns. im also gonna build the framerail mounted battery box this week at some point......

  19. Travel speed is much improved. Might want to slow down the wire a little bit and pause in the puddle a little longer. They look a little cold but that goes along with the 110 machine and heavier material. You might try preheating the area before you weld until you get 220.

Welds look good, I wouldn't worry about 220 for right now. A lot of what you need to do just requires 110. I wouldn't get carried away with the heat portion of things, you will start warping panels. Try butt welding with a couple 18 gauge pieces of steel, you will need to know that for sure.

Thanks fellas. I wont be welding anything heavier like the crossmember notches untill i get 220. But 59 like you were sayin the 110 works great on sheetmetal. I got a good grasp on some butt welds on the bigger firewall patches and some scrap i messed with. Ill practice more though. I have a floor patch and a couple fender bottoms to do....

Practice makes perfect i guess, btw im all ears for any tips and tricks you guys have given me. Ive been a youtube whore for welding vids lately. 59 did you talk to him about possibly lowering the seat price?

also ive been thinking about a different solution to the crossmembers being notched. this really isnt necessary at all, but my buddy nick has a decent amount of 2x4 box tubing he isnt using. im thinking about a x member type setup. something along the lines of this picture. just a thought for now. we will see. id also like to figure some sort of rear swaybar if i can. not too worried about it if it doesnt work tho

Yes, I have a lot of tips on patch panels, but its easier to tell you over the phone than type a novel on it. If you want to talk about that stuff give me a call, shot you a PM.

Also, on the seat he won't send me a picture of what he will be bringing and won't really negotiate on the price. I will just tear this seat apart and fix it. I worked in an upholstery shop for a while, I was just considering building my own seat. Not a big deal.. just some burlap straps, a sheet of plywood, some high density foam, and a covering and I will have a cross country seat.

I'll be waiting for the seat tutorial also :D. Personally I'd like to thin out the back part of the stock bench seat...maybe make it half as thick. I would also like a little more dense foam.

Really easy stuff. I will post pictures on my build thread of it... You wouldn't believe what you get charged and what these jokers and upholstery shops actually do. lol

Looking good. Another "serious" truck build.
I think I would be afraid of taking mine that far apart.

    I need to mine going...
