My appologies;

  1. I've been trying for 2 weeks to post a photo of my checkerboard firewall. I see I'm not the only one to have trouble getting files to follow mail. I've followed all the instructions I can find and the F***ing thing just won't work for me. It must be true, you can't teach an Old Dog any new tricks! I give up, I have better things to do with my time. Just know I'm pretty proud of it and sorry I can't share it with all of you.

Seems like it took me forever to figure it out, and the two keys for me were formatting it to a size below 70K to fit on the HAMB, and also saving/posting the photo as a "jpg" file. Don't even know what it stands for, just know that my pics get downloaded from cam to computer as "bmp", and when I prep 'em for posting, I have to save them as a "jpg". Hope that helps. Keep writing about yer stumbling blocks, that way we can help teach ya.

Ah, well that would do it.
See, the web is funny like that. Windows, inherently, wants to make all it's image files BMP files. It's the standard image file format for that operating system, especially if you're using MS Paint to render images.
What does JPG stand for? Fuck if I remember. It's been a long time since I learned it and never need to know it, so forget it. Not important. What is important is to know that for web based images, you need either JPG, GIF, or PNG. For our purposes here, JPG is the way to go, but then you probably already knew that.

Making JPGs small enough? You can reduce the size of the actual image, or you can use a program like Image Ready or Fireworks that does a handy job of compressing images specifically for this purpose. Photoshop has Image Ready built in these days, but $600 is a lot to spend just for that reason. Try going to Download.com and checking into image editing programs you cand download for free. There's bound to be something there to help. Just make sure it's Freeware and not Trial based software with a time limit on it.

We have Windows "Picture It!" program, an excitable title for an approachable program. It's made it relatively easy for me to learn how to edit and format pics for posting. What program are you using?

I use Adobe Photo Deluxe Home Edition 3.0, but most all of the photo programs that come with computers will do it.

Nice thing about Adobe is, get the picture you want, select the size menu, size it to 6" on the long dimension.
Take note of the resolution in the size menu.
Many times it will say 150 (pixels/inch).
Run that back to 72 and most times you'll end up with a photo of 22 to 65 or so KB after saving it to a file.

Then - most important part - save the photo as a JPG.

I note that the HAMBs size requirements are 70 KB or less, but have found that just under 70 KB (IE: 67-68 KB or so) will be refused sometimes.

6" width is a good dimension because a bit larger and you'll set it up so the page has to scroll side to side which can make reading text clumsy.
Once you go too far in the width dimension, the whole post, including all the text above your post will be too wide.

A little backwards here, but one of the very first things you should do to your photo is decide if it's bright enough to actually see things.
Many photos come through on the HAMB that are too dark to be useful.
To fix that, go into the program and select "Adjust Quality" and then select "Brightness and Contrast" - or wherever you have to go to change Brightness & Contrast.
Run the photo up brighter and add contrast until it looks right then do the resizing and resolution changes.

Photos shot with digi-cams can be virtually all black and the information is still able to be made viewable using the Brightness and Contrast.
If that's not clear, I have a couple photos I can post that would illustrate if you like.

Photos shot with a film camera will improve when scanned in and altered with the Brightness and Contrast, but nothing like the digi-cam photos.

  8. Hay guys thanks for all your help. I do use adoby photo delux and make sure the bites are under 70 KB and in a jpeg formatt. My friend Danny who got me to the H.A.M.B. to start with is going to come over and try to get me on the right track. If you'd like to see my photos now, go to Help your elderly hot rodder posted by dondanno. He's also the one that ran the paint gun.
