If you run too much voltage you usually get metal transfer from one side of the points to the other due to arcing. It will form a pit on one side and a lump on the other. Then when you check the point gap you get an incorrect gap measurement. So you need to file the points flat before rechecking them.

Wow....something is lagging. By the time I replied it was fixed. FYI.....I stopped using Champion plugs back in 1980 for everything except lawn equipment. They really such on motorcycles.

i hope that too much voltage is an issue here. with the 6v coil i was over powering the coil, however it still under the specification for the ignition system itself. i do not have a generator hooked up, so my battery level is at 5.64 volts actually.

now when i swithced to the 12 volts, points are not classified as 6v or 12v to my knowledge so when installing that 12v coil, its does produce alot more power, but with a reubilt dizzy it shouldnt be an issue... hopefully

You have had quite a trip here...so glad you tracked it down. Multiple problems, multiple headaches.

You are correct, points are neither 6 nor 12 volts, that's what the balast resistor is for. Be sure you have it OR an internally resisted coil when you go to 12 volts. The coil should say in it if you need the resistor or not.

Yeah, I quit Champ plugs a long time ago too.

Glad you are up and running.

It will be back to the original coil and 6v when I get the coil back from skip. I like the originality of 6v. And it works well for me. Thanks for the help guys!!

Very Cool.. glad you got it figured out.. cant wait to see it how it screams with the blower back on..

  6. I'm real glad to hear you found the problem. Those things can drive you crazy. I found the same problem with Champion plugs on my flathead. Switched over to Autolite 216's and the problem went away. :D

    Keep up the good work.

Well I started to get some things done to the car today. I tore down the entire front end, installed 37 spindles and kingpins, tore the brakes down and blasted all the internals to ensure everything was free and working good. They are like new. I also got my new tie rods from speedway today. However I used the model a wishbones when I put the car together and with the 37 spindles I have to hear and bend the steering arms straight down about 1 inch to have perfect clearance . Also will be installing a new drag link and pitmant arm to match. After I got as far as I could on that with out bending the arms , I decided to start getting the supercharger ready to reinstall. Polished it all up with some flitz.. That's some amazing stuff . Anyways resealed the intake , all the plentum gaskets replaced and disassembled the charger and resealed it.. Everything looks much better. I'm excited to get the car back together. It will be done tomorrow.

Ok guys.. So I discovered this info: there is no difference in a 6v and a 12v coil other than ohms.... So... You can run six volt into a 12v coil as as long as you have the correct ohm coil it will be just fine. So I bolted my coil adapter plate back on today, threw my old 12v truck coil on, and supplied it with 6v of juice... Car runs fantastic.!! I'm still having a slight hesitation when into the gas, but that fuel air mix has a long way to travel so that's expected. My timing I still acting funny. It's retarding too much under acceleration. Plus I have 2 normal strombergs , not a primary and a secondary. So that's not helping either. But we hopped in it and drove a total of 100 miles today. First a 30 miles round trip rear. Then a 75 mile round trip cruise. It ran great! Rolled down the road with traffic at 55-60 mph.. A few days ago I installed the 37 spindles and switched everything to newer tie rod end style steering instead of ball and socket. It handles extremely well. I'm still getting some wonder from the body roll of not having shocks hooked up. i aligned it with some jigs we used on our old dirt track car, and it goes good.
It was good to have it on the road running good. A nice enjoyable day. A few small odds and ends , and the car will be done ready for the rest of the summer. Looking at new projects now.flathead powered 33-34 ford 3-5 window with a heavy lakes chop. I wanna make a road trip to bonneville like some guys have done. That's my goal

We may need to create a bleed in the vacuum line going to the brake on thevdistributor.
I noticed tha at 3-4 psi it would retard approx 8 degrees. Get a boost gauge on the vac line and let's see what the boost level is and I will come up with a relief valve to limit the retard to put into th line ....;)

Excellent! Thank you Jim for all the great service and information. I got my condenser by the way. I appreciate the hell out of it. I'm saving it for when I get my helmet coil back from skip

  18. Wow, she purrs along nicely. Glad to hear you have the main issue sorted out.
I've enjoyed following along through every minute of the build up and trouble shooting, it's been inspiring and I've learned a bit too.

    Keep at it!

I also fixed some of my wondering steering problem. My tire shop where I had the bias white walls mounted set them at 35 psi...! I never checked it. I dropped it to 26 front and 23 rear like recommended , it felt a whole lot Better

It's hot as hell today but I got off work and had to take the A for a run... It stayed cool! I was impressed. I got on a 3 mile strait away and put my foot into it, wound it up to 75... She ran down the road nice!! The tire pressure sure made one hell of a difference! It was great to blow the carbon out!

  24. sweet congrats its working out. love the salt lake racer idea, I been fiending for a roaster race inspired rod lately, salt lakes would be a blast. I think my plans for my flathead build are going to get kicked up a notch. I just don't have anything to put it in yet.

  25. Street Rodder has a story about these super chargers. September has part two of the story, therefore I am guessing August has part one. There were no August issues on the magazine rack at Wal Mart. I usually do not buy Street Rodder but I bought the September issue.
