I've never been to Speed Week, but I ran the Harley I built for Halibrand out there a couple weeks before Bonneville '06. I know why folks have religious experiences out there now, and also why they put that black line down!

We stopped on the way to Kansas to deliver the bike and thought we'd get some photos. There was a park ranger there and I asked him if we could roll the bike out and snap a few. He said "You can do anything you want! It's a public park." So I loped out a mile or so, made sure there weren't any campfire pits or beer bottle sculptures to hit and then ran the thing until the brakes started grabbing (salt made 'em real sticky).

It was beautiful. Weird thing was, there were FAST bikes up on the turnaround watching me. 180 m.p.h. Hyabusas etc. They had leathers and kevlar suits too, just sittin' there watching me squeeze barely 115 out of that stock 88 in a borrowed long sleeve shirt and my trusty Buco half shell. I pegged that H-D on the access road on the way to the car wash too, but you didn't hear it from me!

If you ever get a chance to do it. DO IT. Be warned, that ranger said do whatever you want out there, but if you get stuck or get hurt it's on you AND your wallet!

Thought this photo shows the essence of the event from the well worn pith hat to the spartan interior and airplane gauges.

"Met the guy that restored the Goldenrod there...can't remember his name."

That would be Mike Cook, Cook Motorsports. Son of Doug Cook, driver of the Stone Woods Cook Willys that just won the NHRA Most Popular Hot Rod poll.

Mike and his family continue to race at Bonneville and El Mirage and promote land speed racing to the World. Mike is the organizer of the private time meet which will run after the World of Speed event later this month. This event is sponsered by Top 1 Oil for this year and will be the subject of a Discovery Channel documentary.

Tonya sets record at Bonneville Salt Flats

Tonya Harding has been at the Bonneville Salt Flats this past week, for Speed Week. She wasn't there as a spectator, but as a driver, competing in the Vintage Gas Coup Class.

On Monday, Tonya did a qualifying run, of 79.1 mph. On Tuesday, she did a second run, at 83.618 mph, establishing a record of 81.37 mph, from the two runs. She is the first person to drive a 1931 vintage gas coup on the Salt Flats, to establish a land speed record. Also, this is the first time that a vintage gas coup has competed at a SCTA-BNI sanctioned event.

The car, named Licket-Split, is owned by Yacolt WA resident Pete Richardson. It's a 1931, stock body Model A coup, powered by a 1932 4 cylinder flathead, with few modifications.

Once again, Tonya Harding is in the record books for being the first to accomplish something no one else has done. She is also the first American woman to successfully perform the very difficult triple axel during figure skating competitions.

  7. She only got the record because everyone else dropped out of that class for fear of having the gas pedal leg clubbed!

These are my two favorites. Don Ferguson's beautiful Ardun powered roadster at sun up, 2007 and my roadster this year at sunup.
