I would look for a running car of a vintage you like. As with all old cars, even if they're running there will always be things to fix and opportunities to learn. You can buy tools as you need them and you can work on it and park it outside. Start small and build up. Any of these guys on the HAMB who are doing a true "build" will tell you its a huge undertaking that takes a lot of time, money and mostly commitment. If your really up to it, you'll find a way to get past the hurdles.

  2. I say build a bike first too unless you have no riding experience. If you haven't been riding for a while this could be really dangerous. Home built bikes rarely ride worth a shit and a beginner rider needs something that is forgiving on the road. I say this with 24 years of riding wisdom in my corner.

Save up $1,000.00 and try to find a roller 60's triumph or 80's Yamaha XS750. The xs looks super gay in stock form but you can take all those parts and switch them over to an aftermarket rigid frame that looks cool and is trustworthy. Also there are a bunch of people making parts for these bikes and I'm sure there are a few good forums to get help from.

Tools: I read some other guys say yard sales and estate sales. That is the best advice. I have plenty of tools but if I ever come across a yard sale I pull over and pretty much always walk away with a set of vice grips or a crescent wrench for $2.00. You can fill up a tool box fast with one weekend of yard sales and $100.00.

Good Luck, take the knowledge you gain from building this project and if you're still into it sell the bike and start collecting car parts with the money.

I'd build a car. If the wheel falls off, you have three left. Still one more than a bike.
