OK. I finally got my plates the other day. This is for anyone trying to build a car as a "specially constructed vehicle" in california. I'll try and condense this. Have all your paperwork filled out before you show up at the dmv 0730 to get your smog exemption sequence number. Have receipts for frame, engine, trans and body. Hopefully you get a number and a temp. operating permit. Now CHP vin verification, assignment. As for dmv,chp etc. BEE COOL!. I found that if I was nice, so was evereyone else. CHP will assign you a vin.Take it to chp on a trailer to avoid any fix it's. My guy was cool. Next smog referee. As long as you have a enclosed crank case system He will assign the vehicle as smog exempt. No open breathers. Have a pcv. Now light and brake inspection. You need. headlights, taillights, front and rear turn signals, high beams, license plate light, dash indicator for turn and highbeam.Good brakes and e brake.Be cool and hopefully they will. Now it costs $150. Take all your paprework to dmv with insurance and a motor vehicle bond witch is bullshit! Get your plates. Hope ths helps someone.

Judging from your other post this wont apply to your reg.of your car and what ever you do dont say you have a specially constructed vehicle. You already have a vin # on your car from the factory so you shouldnt have to do as much as the OP on this thread. But it is good info none the less if you build a car from scratch! Thanks for the post![IMG]

  6. I remember the good old days when I was able to get an LA County Deputy Sheriff to come to my house 15 minutes after I called to verify the Vin on my 1932 chassis so I could get rid of the Special Const number on the Title. Probably around 1992. I was later advised that the law had recently changed and only the CHP was supposed to do it but neither he nor I knew that. I found a DMV office that took the paperwork the Sheriff provided and I got a title with the Vin on it and 1932 Ford.

Probably wouldn't be able to get it registered if I came back to So Cal now. It's registered as a 1932 Ford Street Rod up here. Exempts Fenders, Hood and a few other things.
