    Different kind of "slap", Mains.

Upright Slap is percussive...you're playing percussion on a string instrument. it can be good (Jimbo Wallace, Jim Schecter, Les Claypool) or a nuisance (Kim Nekkoman. he's just a drummer.)

and just like an upright, if it's just the slaps and clicks instead of the actual note played, all is lost.

Exhaust slap is when the 2 cylinders that fire closest together hit in the pipes at the same time...it's more like the noise it makes when you fall down by the pool.:D
    THAT's annoying...and painful!

Brockman Mellowtone STEELPACKS sound like the real thing from the 50s.
They make glasspacks sound like plastic toys.

it's a gift. I found it at the trailer park.:D

  6. And a fine gift it is, my friend.

Say, how would I get my exhaust to sound like Edgar Meyers? Or Victor Wooten? Those are bassists that I admire.

No Flowmasters, please. I have a set on my truck just waiting to be cut off and I'll set it up right again with some Cherry Bombs/Glass Packs. The old '58 just doesn't sound right with turbo mufflers.

  8. Good for you! Nothing sounds worse than a STOCK motor and straight pipes. It's just fucking noise. I hate it more, each time i hear it. A motor with compression/cam, tuned right sounds fine uncorked. But, there's a time and place for that as well. But stock, and no muffs? NOISE. There's nothing worse than a beautiful car erupting into a mass of noise as it accelerates from a traffic signal. 30 inch packs ougtha sound pretty good

  10. Magniflows or 30" glass packs would what I would put on my car. Or use the glass packs as resonators.

Take a good look at those glasspacks before you jump on them. Most all glasspacks have a 2" center tube. They will blow up the end connectors to 2.5" but he core tube is still necked down to 2".

Magnaflow and some others make a standard looking muffler that is actually a glasspack bent into an S shape inside the rectangular body. They actually have the mellower glasspack sound. The core perforated tube is usually larger than a standard glasspack. Don't ask me about dyno tests and all that. I'm talking horse sense. For a big cube motor your garden variety glasspack would probably be restrictive at high RPMs but you would probably need a dyno to prove it.

I liked the Magnaflow for the 50s sound but most of the young bucks wanted the Flowmaster...5.0 Mustang sound.

you say "it doesnt sound good" has anything been done to the engine? cause you can definetly tell when its the exhaust makin the noise verses the engine makin the rumble. you can only get so good of a sound out of a stock motor, all these straight piped new trucks come to mind.

ha and "its a hudson, not a torino" - well said, but there technically is closer to a torino motor in that thing than anything. a hud engine sounds like a hud...

good luck findin the right note, no real muffler experience here, let us know what u decide on, and share a vid so we can hear.

    WTF? 30 foot long mufflers? It ain't a U-boat.

Keith, you're only 31, you look a lot older.

  15. Thanks for the replies.

For the record, the 460 isn't exactly stock. It's .60 over, higher compression, with a decent cam.

The only reason I went with straight pipes to begin with was that I had no mufflers on my 62 Olds and it sounded fantastic....But I think the Olds had much more pipe under the car.

I'm thinking that Magnaflows sound like they might be a good option. I'll let you know what happens.

I had straights on my 34, it was horrible, I couldn't hear myself think, I put on cheapo glasspacks, it sounds pretty ok.
Iran straight lakes on my 54 Chevy and then I put on Smithy's, it's louder now.

I will put them into development for next year. I am currently working on Lee Sklar, Geezer Butler, and Curt Christenson.
I might toss in some Cliff Burton for effect.

    Dammit. wrong forum again!

  18. My Elky was running a 427 with Spin Tech mufflers through 3" exhaust. She was good and loud when you opened it up, but had I nice low rumble at idle.

  19. Thanks man. real nice.

I had the same problem on my '47 Ford, the steelpack exhaust was just too loud for my neighbors, so I got a pair of Smittys 30" glasspacks. They are fairly quiet at idle, moderately loud if you accelerate. The flathead V8 sounds sexy. Most importantly you won't go deaf after a long trip.

  23. ***UPDATE***

I went with the 30" glasspacks. These aren't the cheap ass cherry Bombs...they're much thicker, and fully welded. They're 30" long and have a 2.5" ID, so I don't have to deal with constricting the exhaust flow through the muffler.

They sound fantastic. A nice low rumble at idle, good deep exhaust tones at cruising speed, and they really bark when I step on it...

    Thanks for the help fellas.

LUX BLU , I'v just read this thread, noticed you are familiar with Magnaflows and exhaust systems.

I am aware of the construction differences between the straight through Mags and the two chamber XL series .. how would you describe the sound tone quality and dB level differences ?

500ci, 3.5" dia coll into resonator box, 3"out, into the area where the mufflers will locate (60" long under both sides of car), tail pipes over axel to rear of car.

    Thanks for your comments.
