Right now I am using a flux core wire, but I use a Millermatic DVI , need to get a bottel , but Fuck thats 200 bucks I just dont have......
Damn, I can't believe you're doing that without gas! Nice work! Wish I had the balls to tackle that on my car.
Looks good so far. Take your time when placing the rear window! A lot of these chops seem to have the rear window too low and it will look like it slid down off the roof. The window should move up a little into the roof and the catwalk area reworked accordingly. Roll it out like you did and spend a long time staring at it. Use some cardboard and tape to fill in the sail panels to get a better idea how the finished top and rear window look.
AH! No gas, that is why the welds look the way they do. OK well I understand being broke as well as anyone that is for sure, but you are going to use up more grinding disk than that gas will cost ya LOL! Chop is looking good, its got nice lines, I think is awesome that you are doing it yourself! Jim
Looking fine so far. The grinding and finishing will take longer than you expect but if you get the lay of the rear window just right it will be a great chop. Keep going! And keep posting updates.
Because of money, I also do without gas, and it s amazing what can be done correctly It takes a bit of scrap before welding without burning holes ...
Well I have managed to get my compressor back together got the Ugly off the roof....Only pass door and quarter panel to do now....
Well I have deceided to remove lip on back quarter panel and trunk.... and I have rear window where I like it so now i need to get a sheet of metal and finish it up
I've seen a few different ways of removing that seam on the rear quarters. How did you remove yours? I'm thinking of doing the same thing.
That roof line looks sick from all angles. My first and only chop was a '41 Ford P/U. I gas hammered welded it with oxyacetylene . You can get a pretty small bottle for your wirefeed - that's what I did because it will get used once a year at that. Was enough for last winter's project. Had to fill it this winter for the COE redux. Asked about stepping up a size and they said $50, but I stayed with the same puny bottle. My driveway is a steeper 6 man push - also have the floor mounted Habor Freight winch ..... made mine removable with their bumper receiver mount. Just did that to get MR SHORTY back in the garage last Fall.... We used my Brothers's very old HF winch - the smallest little ATV size they sell - to get the Dodge Dart up on the U-haul last Summer. That impressed me enough to get a bit larger one for my driveway and other use.
Lookin good. I like The porportions. THE back window and corners are always The toughest. Keep it going
That is starting to take shape. I think I would just tack it together like the roof is in post 43 and get everything fitted and then hunt down a bottle for the mig to get away from using the flux wire when you finally weld it all up. I found a used bottle that was actually full on Craigslist for 50 bucks one day and about got a speeding ticket running out to get it on my lunch hour. Keep posting those progress photos.
what a BEAUTEFUL day it was , doing clutch on wife's honda and did oil change on bro"s bike and did flame job on welder
I killed a shoebox thr first time I tried a chop.... You are doing a great job... I know what bad is .... there fore I know what good is LOL
well I haven't done shit to car lately so I did manage to score a front clip and rear end from a s10 , got the rear cleaned and painted (the orange is the color I am going to do motor also) and while I had the paint out I did this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
well I have managed to get a bottle and have made some progress on roof, lookin good but now have a camera to take pics , Soon I hope and getting ready to clip front ( after I get Hernia? fixed)
