I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Rectal Cancer in Oct of 2005.

I went through 3 months of Chemo & Radiation at the same time (including a bad reaction to the Chemo that put me in the ER for a week) then they let me regain my strength so I could have major surgery to remove the tumor which left me with a temporary colostomy. After recovering from the surgery I got hit with 6 more months of Chemo. In October of 2006 they 'reversed' the colostomy.

Absolutely the worst thing I ever went through in my life, but I'm still alive and kicking - I'll be 68 years old this week. Unless I would tell you, you'd never know, but if you had seen me during 2006 you would seen one sick guy; when I see pictures taken of me during that time it is scary.

My point is, you can beat it Cancer, but it ain't easy. Tell your Dad to hang in there.

  4. Big ole' bummer the big 'C' is . . . but you have to fight that dirty bastard as hard as you can!

My Aunt (really my second Mom!) was diagnosed with colon/rectal cancer end of last year, went to the Mayo in the spring - they couldn't do much for her. Sent her home in a very debilitated state - which I'm not happy about! My Mom (77 years old - a former nurse) helped her get back on her feet and living life. She's made it to her 80th birthday in July. When she got home, she could barely sit up on the side of her bed (end of April) - when I went to see her in July, she was walking, driving her car to town -- even played golf (played 6 of 9 holes) twice while I was there. They kicked her butt out of hospice - because she was doing too well. Bottom Line - she has chosen to live every day as best she can. Her motto is "Just Do It" (she started that WAY before Niki) - she told me, "I just keep moving . . .". She was a teacher her whole career and she is still teaching me -- how to "live" and not give up . . . regardless of what the Doc's say.

I wish your Pops the very best -- tell him to keep living, keep eating and NOT to give up . . . there will be many good days ahead!

Lost my Dad to Cancer in 1999 (my best friend) tell your Dad you love him, to hang in there, and that 65 guys on the Hamb are pulling for him!

  7. He just setup a PayPal account - for those of you who wish to donate some $$$ to help his pops. I don't want to give out the address, so drop him a PM and he'll send you the PP address. I encouraged him to do this - just makes it easy for those of us who can't stand writing checks!

The benefit was this past Sunday, couldn't have asked for a better turnout. Thanks to everyone that donated something and gave kind words.
