That hood scoop looks *****in'. I think a lace top would look great, and it would add some cl*** to the top of the car, to balance out all that cl*** in the wheel wells.

Nice!! That T-bird scoop looks really good on there!

  4. Just some ideas. I love all the '60 Fords. My father had a '60 Galaxie 4dr when I was 13 years old and I talked him into ordering the factory skirts for $12.60. But not today.

The attached pics show a custom built in Wichita like your tudor. The secret is they shortened the roof maybe a foot. It changes the whole personality of the car. Its newly done and I hope to see it in a magazine soon.

    Radiused wheel wells too.

I really like the wires and scoop on the sedan, both were great choices. Keep it up...

Keep the Y-Block. I don't know about everyone else, but I think they're cool as ****- and it is period.
    Dump the dump tubes.
Drop the rear a bit more.
And whatever you do, keep the chrome!

    Nice ride, Man.

  11. J,

Fords outsold Chevy's in 1957!! its true. I really like the Powder Blue 60 Fords...I missed a Starliner a couple of years ago. Take a look at my 61. I know its OT for this thread, BUT, its Powder Blue too...with Flames, can you see em?

Murph, THAT is an amazing fact -- especially considering how popular that Chevy was and is.

I WONDER if, maybe, it was because GM was perceived in '57/'58 as being a little behind-the-times stylewise? Isn't that about the time Harley Earle was fading away out of the picture?

  13. I just read that there was an industry wide slump in car sales. The factories cut dealer allocations on all makes, but Ford sales jumped and it was the first time they beat out the Chevys since 1935...that kinda hard to believe as well.

It's also ironic, Murph, that MOPAR sales jumped significantly for '57, due to Exner finny Forward Look cars. Ford & Chevy were the sales leaders, of course, but the Chrysler Family were riding comparatively HIGH!

'58, of course, brought a recession, consumer gas-mileage-consciousness and new trends in thought as to what consumers needed or wanted. Though the Hudson nameplate and, effectively, the Nash name, too, were on the way out, AMC was in an overall great position, having KEPT FAITH that Americans would turn on to compact economy cars, some day. "Some day" apparently arrived in '58, and Studebaker wasn't far behind with their Lark.

Heck, I don't think most people realize how FAST things changed -- year-by-year -- in the auto industry in the 1950s. Made the '40s seem tame, didn't it?

I think a comparably equipped '57 Ford was a couple hundred dollars cheaper than a Chevy so guess which one would get most fleet (taxi, cop car, rentals etc.) contracts?
The sales number difference was very small, small enough that fleet sales would have definitely made the difference.

By the way, I have always thought the '60 was the best looking Ford since the '33.
Especially the Starliner and for some reason, the Wagons. Must be the back window.

'60 Mercury too, previous fav Mercs are the '54 and '41.

Could never figure out why Ford hadn't hidden the shift rod inside the steering jacket yet though, made the interior look, well, a couple hundred dollars cheaper? ;)

DrJ, man I have to agree about the '33 (that pretty herring-bone grill, slanted back just SO!). And the '60 was a VERY clean-lined car. When designers of that era started trying to make too many things work, they often wound up with cars that lacked overall eye-appeal & design continuity.

Harley Earle had occasional misfires, as did **** Teague of Packard/AMC -- they jumped to mind, not to isngle them out! Nash has been another make that makes me crazy to look at. Nashes were some of the best engineered cars in the country, especially from the late-'30s to mid-'50s. BUT, I feel in an effort to look DIFFERENT from Detroit, they just got weird instead. Sure, even I appreciate the merits of the bathtubs through the Italian-designed stuff later. BUT, I wonder what Nashes wuld have looked like had they gone with more home-grown design talent (?).

'course, Nash-wise, it's sort of a MOOT point, in that the senior Nahses & Hudsons died on the vine after '57, but the MULTIPLE Rambler models & the stalwart Met were witing in the wings to bolster AMC sales clear through the 1970s.

Sorry I digressed so badly there! But I still want to add an underscore. Teague was, in large part, responsible for great designs like the Packard show cars & production cars AND for the AMX & Javelin. But he also stepped in dog-doo with the oversized Marlins. Those could have been so much nicer if a foot or so SHORTER & a little NARROWER (more in cl*** with the Mustang, Camaro, etc.

NO body always gets it right!

That is the one thing that those "cool" red plastic fuel lines were noted for back when, burning cars to the ground.

Hey, I'm liking the wires and scoop.

So how long did it take to clean up the wires? Gotta agree, the wide whites are too much with the light color and the wires. So pull them off and call me, I need them for that old chevy of mine... scoop is *****in.

You think 1960 Fords were ugly, then where does that leave my 1958 Fairlane? Is there a step lower than Ugly?

  23. Love the scoop and the tire wheel combo. Also, the paint works for me. The Y-blocks are PERFECT. Drive it once you get the hood painted to match the rest of the car. 60 Fords were the best looking of all Fords produced after the 32.
    Later,

My Dad felt the same way about the 57 Chevy and had decided his first NEW car was to be a 58... and then the 58s came out. He bought a nice used 56 Olds 88 instead.

The 60 Ford is darn nice as is. Don't see any conflict in the hood exposed carbs and drag pipes behind the wheel wells and the "custom" flair. All part of the era.
